Page 8 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1975 Gladys and the Pips best seller of 1974 By MARY CAMPBELL AP Newsfeatures Writer Gladys Knight and the Pips had single records on the best-selling chart longer than anybody else dur ing 1974 but the one song that stayed on the chart longest wasn’t theirs. It was “The Way We Were, ’’ a movie title song sung by Barbra Streisand. Charlie Rich, a country singer, was second to Gladys Knight and the Pips with records a long time on the singles chart. Englishman Elton John, who made a big tour of the U.S. in ’74, was next; Jim Croce, whose records took a surge after his death in September 1973, was next, and Olivia Newton-John, Australian but singing country, was fifth, all according to Billboard Magazine. The top singles instrumental per former was Marvin Hamlisch, whose hit was his Oscar-winning ar rangement of Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer’ for “The Sting.” The best-selling albums of the year were “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, by Elton John, “Greatest Hits,” John Denver, “Band on the Run,” Paul McCartney, “Innervi- sions,” Stevie Wonder, and “YouFT Mess Around With Jim, ’ Jim Croce. Croce and Helen Reddy were top male and female album artists, each with four big ones dur ing the year. The duo Seals and Crofts also had four hit albums. Billy Cobham led Herbit Hancock as top instrumental album artist. Charlie Rich had both the top country single, “There Won’t Be Anymore, besting Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December, and top country album, “Behind Closed Doors,” ahead of Miss Newton-John’s “Let Me Be There. The O’Jays put out the lop soul album, “Ship Ahoy,” and Roberta Flack the top soul single, “Feel Like Making Love.” When the Grammy Awards were given in 1974 for the best records not based on best selling of the previous year, Stevie Wonder came out on top with four. Roberta Flack’s “Killing Quarter, after 22. Rick Wakeman left Yes andMick Taylor left the Rol ling Stones. Scott Joplin’s grave in Queens got a tombstone and so did the grave of Andrew McCrew in Dallas, the latter thanks to Don McLean’s song about the American mummy, “The Legend of Andrew McCrew. ” Rock had its first defec tor, Thomas Barta, lead guitarist in the Hungarian Locomotiv GT. He fell in love with an American girl while the group was touring the U.S., married her and didn’t go back. In 1974, 600 to 800 hours of tapes turned up in a New Jersey warehouse made by Jimi Hendrix, the first black superstar, who died in 1970. David Bowie surprised fans by turning away from theatricality. Dan Hartman, bass guitarist with the Edgar Winter Group, went more toward it, with a guitar suit which turned him into a walking wireless transmitter. Bob Mason of Stardrive was at tacked on stage during a concent. There were some evidences of nos talgia, Suzi Quatro doing punk rock, Bobby Vinton and Paul Anka back with hits, Pat Boone recording “Candy Lips” and Roy Rogers doing “Hoppy, Gene and Me. ” Top movie soundtracks were “American Graf fiti,” music of the early ’60s, and “The Sting,” melodic ragtime. Many people thought that not enough new and exciting was shak ing in the world of rock and longed for an event like the emergence of the Beatles. In country music, some singers formed the performers-only Associ ation of Country Entertainers. They didn’t like the Country Music Association’s giving its top vocalist of the year awards to Olivia Newton-John, an Australian, and to Ronnie Milsap, a blond North Carolinian who is a relative new comer to country music. Tennessee ryland in Nashville toured Moscow, Leningrad and three southern Soviet republics and the Rus loved them. Tanya Tucker of stone)?’’— at age 15. The year was big for family life in popular music. Original Supreme Mary Wilson, 30, married Pedro Ferrer, 30, the group’s Dominican-born road manager. Gladys Knight, 30, married Barry Hankerson, executive assistant to the mayor of Detroit. Sly Stone, 30, married Kathy Silva, 21, in Madison Square Garden. The couple soon split; she took their son, then they patched it. Peter Wolf, 28, lead singerfor the J. Geils Band, married actress Faye Dunaway, 33. Paul Williams married Katy Clinton. Liza Minnelli, 28, wed Jack Haley Jr., 40. They each had a parent in “The Wizard of Oz. Jimmy Webb, 26, married Patsy Sullivan, 19, on the ranch owned by her musician brother-in-law, Jim Messina, and there were “Up, Up and Away” bal loon rides for children attending the reception. Plane wing design studied at TAMU Me Softly with his Song was record of the year and best pop vocal by a woman. It was a big year for tours, some ‘—mt of “retirement” like Bob coming out of ‘ Dylan, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Frank Sinatra who put his foot in his mouth in Australia; Wonder, celebrating being alive after a bad car wreck in 1973; Maggie Bell, a Scot with an impassioned delivery, hitting it big for the first time; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young reuniting; also tours by Joni Mitch ell, Elton John, George Harrison, a smaller tour by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The Who came to the Un ited States for four nights at Madi son Square Garden, worked on the film “Tommy. A three-day Black and Latin Festival was held in Zaire. Jazz rock was big, with Herbie Hancock’s LP, “Headhunters,” sel ling three-quarters of a million. Rock groups from Europe, other than British, began to get hits in America, like Focus and Golden Earring from Holland, Mocedades from Spain, ABBA and Blue Swede from Sweden, PFM from Italy. Sister Janet Mead of Australia sand “The Lord’s Prayer” to a rock beat and had a hit. Ray Stevens sold three million copies of “The Streak.” Maria Muldaur got a lot of attention as a hit newcomer and for her hit record, “Midnight at the Oasis. Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods sang “Billy Don’t Be a Hero for the teeny-boppers. The Moody Blues split up after 10 years and so did the Modern Jazz An innovation in aircraft wing de sign may be emerging from research at A&M. TAMU scientists say insight into controlling vortices (circular movement of air at the wings lead ing edges) could improve the per formance at landing and takeoff for conventional sub-sonic aircraft. This is the result of research fi nanced by the Office of Naval Re search, Department of the Navy. Dr. W. P. Jones is head of the investigating group that includes Dr. Balusu M. Raoand Dr. Allan G. Parker. Air flow over a delta wing (like the supersonic transport) separates and vortices are formed above the wing. Scientists are interested in making use of the lift that the vortices can provide. By controlling the position of the vortices on the wing, lift can be increased. “The purpose of the study is to investigate the behavior of these vortices under unsteady flow condi tions,” Jones explained. “Model of a series of delta platforms will be tested in the TAMU wind tunnel. The tunnel has been provided with a facility for oscillating its airstream. “The behavior of the flow over the delta placed in the oscillating air- stream will be studied in detail,” he continued. “Measurements of the aerodynamic pressures on the wing will be made along with the total air loads. “In parallel with the experimen tal investigation, for which Dr. Parker will be responsible, a theoretical study will be made to develop a theory to predict the be havior of the vortices and to esti mate the pressure distribution on such wings in unsteady flow, ” Jones said. “Dr. Rao arid myself will be doing the theoretical work. “The interest in a wing of this type is associated with the SST,” Jones pointed out. “By controlling the position of the vortices, we hope to make use of their lift. “The general concept of control ling the vortices might also help im prove the performance of conven tional aircraft at take-off and land ing,’’ he concluded. Jones explained that conventional craft can stall at a 12 or 13 degree angle of attack, whereas a double delta canard wing with controlled vortices could fly inclined at almost a 50 degree angle of attack.
