(AP) — University of Texas coaches signed three junior college football players today but the Texas Aggies got the big defen sive tackle the Texas coaches had hoped would replace All-American Doug English. The Longhorns got letters of in tent from: -Alfred Lee, 5 feet 10, 170 pounds, defensive back at Tyler Junior College. -Ernest Lee, 6-4, 245, defensive tackle and tight end, Tyler Junior College. -Victor Moore, 6-4, 245, linebacker, Kilgore Junior College. -Defensive tackle Charley John son, 6-3 and 274, also from Tyler Junior College, had been expected to sign with Texas but switched to Texas A&M. In addition to English, Texas loses Fred Currin, injured earlier this year, freshman Brad Shearer and senior David McLeon are the only experienced defensive tackles returning. Assistant coach Bill Ellington said Texas also expected to sign Jerry Anderson, 6-1, 190, a defensive back at Northeast Oklahoma A&M. Ellington called Anderson “very, very outstanding.” Alfred Lee and Anderson are ex pected to provide immediate help because Texas loses Terry Melan- con and Sammy Mason from the secondary. Moore is expected to give Texas its traditional big linebacker. Wade Johnson and Sherman Lee, both 6-1 and 225, are seniors. Because of the new 30-scholarship limit, major colleges were not expected to sign many junior college graduates, who have only two years of eligibility. Texas obviously feels it needs quick replacements at defensive tackle, defensive back and linebacker. Davis happy with Texas ARLINGTON, Tex. Davis told Ranger General Man ager Don O’Brien by the telephone that he was anxious to get to Texas. “He sounded very happy about coming down here to play,” O’Brien said. “He said he was looking for ward to getting back to a warm weather climate. He spent most of his career in a warm weather area with the Dodgers before he was traded to Montreal last season. ca * ' 1 ' ' ' ' ' SC3 '. 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ SC3 2700 SOUTH TEXAS AWE. scored Ten after coniiq id to tie 4 md of regul arrelson le ■ed by Ter fourteen i »nd half.
