Bill passed
about tapes
WASHINGTON (AP) — Legisla
tion prohibiting destruction of
former President Richard M.
Nixon’s tapes and assuring court ac
cess to the tapes and related docu
ments was passed by the House
Tuesday.
The House acted by voice vote,
sending the measure to the Senate,
which has passed similar but not
identical legislation.
The bill overrides an agreement
between the General Services Ad
ministration and Nixon which pro
vided, among other things, that the
tapes be destroyed on Nixon’s death
or Sept. 1, 1984, whichever came
first.
The new legislation would re
quire congressional authorization
for destruction of the tapes or
documents.
