Twenty-one groups
will receive money
from local UF drive
By STEVE GRAY
Staff Writer
If all goes well, 21 local, state and national
charity agencies will receive their share of more
than $ 160,000 being raised by the two local United
Fund (UF) campaigns.
Bill Landiss, chairman for the College Station
drive, said Monday approximately 73 per cent of
the College Station drive’s goal of $30,000 had
been reached. The drive began Oct. 1.
“The money’s kind of coming in slow, most of
it from the university. But we hope to wind up our
campaign before Christmas, Landiss said, who is
a drive chairman for the first time.
He pointed out that it was after Jan. 1 of this
year before the 1973 goal of $29,000 was reached.
James W. Stegall, president of the board of
directors for the Greater Bryan Uftited Fund,
Inc., also said Monday that city’s campaign is
nearly complete.
“We’ve reached just over 94 per cent of our
goal or about $124,000 out of the $131,690 we re
trying to raise this year. We ll probably finish up
our drive a couple of weeks before Christmas,”
Stegall said.
The Bryan campaign, which also began Oct.
1, raised just over $93,000 last year.
Both drives do not serve the same agencies. A
breakdown of local charity organizations served by
both for 1974 are as follows:
Agency
Bryan UF
CS UF
American Red Cross
$12,000
$1,400
Boy Scouts
16,000
2,600
Boys’ Club
36,000
900
Brazos County Community
Council
900
900
Brazos Valley Rehabilitation
Center
11,000
3,500
Central Brazos Valley
Mental Health Center
4,006
4,000
Girl Scouts
9,000
3,000
Junior Museum of Natural
History
1,200
1,500
Retired Senior Volunteer
Program (RSVP)
1,200
1,600
Salvation Army
9,000
1,000
The above allocations were requested at a
series of budget hearings held by committees from
both fund drives, prior to the beginnings of the
campaigns. The amount promised to the different
agencies depends on the money each received the
previous year, the funds raised by each agency’s
own effort and the purpose for which the money
will be used, said Landiss and Stegall.
The Bryan .drive will also serve the following:
Sue Haswell Boys’ Club Extension, $1,500; Brazos
County Girls’ Club, $15,000; Brazos Valley Family
Planning Program, $500; Bryan Welfare Fund,
$4,000; Camp Sweeney Diabetic Center, $390;
Texas United Community Services, $100; United
Service Organization, Inc. (USO), $600; and the
Youth Center, $3,300.
The College Station campaign has also allo
cated money for the following: College Station
Recreation Council, $6,000; Brushy Day Care
Center, $600; and Community House, Inc.,
$6,000.
The local drives are two of the 210 campaigns
being held in the state under the direction of the
Texas United Community Services (TUCS) in Au
stin. The state UF goal this year is more than $53
million, up $3 million over 1973. Membership in
TUCS is voluntary with charity agencies paying
$35 per year and incjividuals $7 a year, said Jim
Wimberly, director of planning and research for
TUCS.
“The basic objectives of TLJCS is to keep our
members informed on legislative action that might
affect charity organizations and provide them with
campaign materials at cost and advertisements for
local drives,” said Wimberly.
“We also receive voluntary contributions
from our members based on the local drive goals
and the money received per capita in a given city,”
Wimberly said. “The money we get goes into
TUCS’ operating budget.”
The budget for TUCS this year is about
$148,000, $6,000 of which comes from member
ship dues. Last year’s budget was more than
$151,000.
“The bulk of our voluntary contributions
come from the larger city campaigns like Houston,
Dallas, Ft. Worth and San Antonio,” Wimberly
said.
“We will probably get, for example, about
$30,000 from the Houston drive.
The UF goal in Houston this year is
$12,465,468; San Antonio, $6,037,753; Dallas,
$10,676,830; and Ft. Worth, $5,544,060.
The Bryan campaign budget has $100 allo
cated for TUCS this year. The College Station UF
is not a member ofTUCS. Landiss said the College
Station drive was at one time a member.
“We didn’t join the state agency this year,
Landiss said, “because we were asked to join a
little bit too late, we felt that TUCS probably
would not really be able to help us this year. So we
decided to save the money.”
Although UF work on a local level is mostly
volunteer, top officials on the state level receive
salaries, said Wimberly. The state executive direc
tor makes about $25,000 annually while directors
of public relations, field operations, and planning
and research are paid about $16,000 a year, said
Wimberly.
Landiss said the College Station drive has
been strictly a volunteer effort. But Stegall said
$6,000 has been allocated in the Bryan fund for
operating expenses.
“We re running a fairly big campaign and we
have to have something set up where we can oper
ate efficiently. We re paying a secretary about
$200 a month and the rest goes toward office rent,
cleaning bills, postage and phone bills,” Stegall
said.
