Engineers to help small businesses Small businesses in Texas are to get help with possible health hazards. TAMU industrial engineers be lieve the purposes of the Occupa tional Safety and Health Act of 1970, concerning small businesses, may he best served by informing man agement about the intent of the Act and how to meet the requirements. “Today, it is recognized that agencies of the government are in capable of conducting health and safety inspections of all business es tablishments for hazards associated with job health and safety, exp lained project director Dr. Richard Konzen. “As a consequence, small businesses and industries are not receiving the services intended by the Act.” The team of engineers contracted with the American Industrial Hygiene Association to develop a means by which training and con sultative services in industrial hygiene can be provided to small businesses and industries. The con tract requires the establishment of an Industrial Hygiene Center which will provide training in the form of short courses on the Texas A&M campus. The courses will include; Indus trial Hygiene; Industrial Toxicol ogy; Industrial Hygiene Instrumen tation; Ventilation of Industrial Pro cesses; and Radiation Hazards. These five courses are to be pre sented January through May, with three of the courses repeated during the latter part of the year. “No re gistration fee is required for atten dance at the courses,” Konzen said. Another important facet of the program is a walk-through survey by the TAMU team, conducted at the request of the individual indus try, to provide assistance in the rec ognition and prevention or control aspects of occupational health ex posures. This service is limited to small industries within a radius of approximately 200 miles of the TAMU campus. Send Dad A Bottle!
