MSC decor Page 6 THE BATTALION TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1974 (Continued from page 1) bles and gold finished light fixtures continue the air of “sophistication,” Pahhnann suggested. “There’s no sense having a look of a cow col lege. ” Pahlmann was asked about the high gloss finish on the tables which already show signs of scuffing from the numerous students who natur ally use the coffee tables as foot rests. “Don’t worry (about the finish),” he replied, “that’ll wear down in time.” The decorator said he had “to fight” to get the yellow/tan brick floor tile which lines the concourses of the MSC. “That dark red (in the old MSC) seemed depressing.” He said he was trying to get away from the “old hat decor in the old section which just “wasn’t very conducive to hand ling the masses of students.” Many fixtures, particularly ta bles, throughout the complex are placed for decoration only, Pahl mann said. Examples of such are a pair of antique wooden cabinets in the Browsing Library and the long ta bles spaced throughout the Rudder Theatre Center. The Browsing Library in fact will soon be known by a different name, Pahlmann said. He intends to hang various paint ings of dogs on the walls in the room, with the focal picture being that of Reveille — the Aggie mascot. It will then be officially called the Reveille Room. Pahlmann’s firm also received a $15-20,000 fee for the furnishings in the Former Student Association wing, according to Richard “Buck” Weirus, executive director of the association. Furnishings in the wing totaled $90,000. But unlike the other parts of the University Center, the funds came from alumni donations. “We had planned to get someone else, but when the university con tracted Pahlmann we also decided to hire him, since we wanted a de gree of continuity with the rest of the center,” Weirus said. He concedes that the Scottish tar tan decor of the area doesn’t exactly fit the generally held vision of con tinuity. Pahlmann selected the scheme in honor of the family tartan of alum nus James M. “Cop” Forsyth who donated a large portion of the funds used to construct the wing. A portion of the MSC still has not been finished, including the origi nal “living room of fhe campus” building now being remodeled. The expansive student lounge area is expected to be ready by next semester, Luedecke said. Five large chandeliers will hang from the lounge’s high ceilings complementing the numerous sofas, tables and chairs. Two flag stands, holding six flags each, will also ornament the lounge area. When the rest of the MSC is open, Luedecke said, the various exhibits and sales tables now lining the concourses will be replaced by information “kiosks.” Three of the eight-sided wood, metal and glass display cases will be located in each of the center’s hall ways. Persons wishing to post notices in the building will be required to place them inside the locked glass display cases. A key to the case will be granted after the desired notice is approved by the University Center Facilities office. Atop each kiosk will be a televi sion monitor which will flash listings of the Center’s daily activities.
