Page 10 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1974 Ferns get 4th place The women volleyballers took fourth at the Northwest Texas State Tournament this weekend. After playing six trains consisting of Northwest Texas, West Texas, Oklahoma, Midwestern and South ern Methodist, the women ad vanced to finals play. Their record ran A&M 1, NTS 1; WTS 1, A&M 1; A&M 2, OU 0; A&M 2, Midwestern 0; and A&M 2, SMU 0. The record put A&M sec ond in their pool. In finals, the women lost to Uni versity of Texas at Arlington in two good games. The UTA coach said the A&M women played the best games against her team thus far. She also commented that Aggies made her women paly their game. There was a lot of offense by the Ags, but they just couldn’t get the points on the board. The scores were UTA over A&M 15-10 and 15-5. In play against West Texas, the women “just couldn’t get it to gether,’’ Coach Laura Kitzmiller said. ’Tt looked like someone sent a messed up copy of the team on the court. ” “Zone should be no problem. Baylor and Mary Hardin-Baylor will offer us little competition. Sam Houston’s good, but we have a good chance to beat them, if our progress continues,” Kitzmiller said. Men win volleyball It was one up and one down for male volleyball players this weekend in Houston. After whipping Rice into shape taking three sets to one, the Aggies faced the Cougars from University of Houston. The first team looked great taking the cats 15-5 and 15-7. The second team couldn’t make the same kind of showing and lost, 15-8 and 15-9. The tie-breaking game was a case of one team leading the other with another turn-about the next serve. The Cougars took the game by the necessary two point-lead, 18-16. “Brian Kearns and Phil Darval were outstanding in their spike re coveries, spiking into the right spots and moving all the time,” said Coach Dan Bibeau. Area teams finish on top in all games By TONY GALLUCCI Staff Sports Writer Area football teams smashed their opponents 295-21 over the weekend, including five shutouts. The Consolidated Tigers blasted to their second win of the year and their second in zone play with a masterful upset of Brenham. Seniors Bill McGee and W. T. Gil bert did the offensive work for the Tigers in the 13-0 victory. Consol piled up 293 yards includ ing 74 passing. The Tigers are now 2-6 for the year and 2-1 in zone put ting them second behind unde feated Navasota. Consol will be fac ing Tomball this weekend in Tom- ball in their next-to-last game of the season. The big district 15-4A shootout turned out to be a mass slaughter as the Bryan Vikings did away with the Corsicana Tigers, 58-0. Curtis Dic key scored four touchdowns to lead the ranked Vikings to their seventh win of the season with no losses and one tie. This was supposed to be the year of the Tiger but Bryan made non sense out of that expression with the second decimation of a team so named this year (The Vikings also beat previously high ranked Con roe, 47-0). The Allen Academy Rams de stroyed Texas Military Institute 35-0 to boost their record for the season to 6-2 and a shot at the Texas crown. The Caldwell Hornets blis tered Manor 47-0 upping their re cord to 5-1 for the season. The Aggies completed the area shutout sweep with their 20-0 vic tory over Baylor. In other area games, Hearne beat Rosebud-Lott 21-7, Navasota blasted New Caney 46-8, Some- rville blistered Shiner 55-6 and lola beat Lorena 24-7. Embrey’s Jewelry ~~ We Specialize In A&gie Rings.
