SUBLETT AND KARL WOLFSHOHL Last weekend was the first weekend of squirrel season in East Texas, so Backlashes and Blown Patterns made plans to be there. Caddo Lake with its primeval woode was the logical choice. Cat squirrels are usually thick around Caddo, so we planned to get our limit in the morning and then fish the rest of the day. We got to the lake just about daylight Saturday, piled our gear into the boat at Johnson s Ranch and headed up the channel to Goat Island. For some reason the motor kept dying. After assessing the situation, we came to the conclusion that we had forgotten to open the gas tank vent. Once again, we headed up the lake. The fun began then. A big cypress tree was down across the Government Ditch, making a short run a long one by causing a detour by Alligator Bayou. About the time we got to the logjam, the water pump on the motor quit with a cloud of smoke. We decided to drift back down the Ditch, since we had no other choice. Half a mile and no fish later, the motor cooled off enough to get hack to the landing. After paying an exorbitant price for a rental motor, we decided to fish until late afternoon, since it was too late to hunt by then. The first place we tried was the cypress hrbreak just above Johnson’s. Two bass and a big pickerel, were soon boated. The pickerel, which is native in Texas only to Caddo Lake, looks sort of like a gar and hits artificial baits and fights like a bass, except more spectacularly. Things were just too good to last, and sure enought they didn’t. We did not catch another fish all day. About three o’clock, we went into the woods of Goat Island to get after some squirrels. Everything looked right for a good hunt. There were plenty of acorns and other food for a good squirrel crop. The only thing in the woods that afternoon were mosquitos. That’s not to say they were big, but we saw one sitting on a limb picking his teeth with a post-oak sapling. The woods around us sounded like a war, but we couldn’t believe all the shooting was at squirrels. We did not see a single one. Early Sunday morning. Buck Birdsong from Long view and Carl Brown from Crockett came down to Hen derson to hunt with us. Buck and Carl are 1974 A&M graduates. We hoped that Boles Creek would be more habitable for squirrels than Caddo. The woods around the creek looked good enough to have a squirrel on every limb. Wrong again, because between the four of us we only saw one squirrel. We left Boles Creek and went to our ace in the hole, Alan Burton’s woodlot near Carlisle. There are always some fox squirrels on Alan’s place. Finally we got some game. Carl and Buck teamed up to bring down an ancient sow fox squirrel. Sheepishly, we returned to Henderson to dress our trophy. It proved too tough to skin, let alone eat. Some weekends, it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed. 1HE STEEL BELTED R4DINL that eliminates the nuisance of rotating fives every 6,000 miles. CINTUR4TO CN75 DESIGNED FOR AND TUNED TO AMERICAN CARS. The Oakland A s, who scored the winning run on the only hit they got, held oil a ninth-inning Balti more rally Wednesday and won their way into the 1974 World Series with a 2-1 victory over the punchless Orioles. What made this one so strange was that the A s managed only one hit all day, and they didn t get that one until the seventh inning when Reggie Jackson banged a double off the left field wall, just over the reach of a leaping Don Baylor. It scored Sal Bando from first with what turned out to be the winning run. The A s first run came courtesy of Mike Cuellar’s wildness. It was scored on four walks with two outs in the fifth inning when Cuellar was lifted from the game without ever giving the A s anything resembling a base hit. LOOKING AHEAD?
