The Huskies beat Cincinnati in their season opener 21-17 and beat Iowa State last week 31-28. The Ag gies beat Clemson 24-0 and sixth- ranked LSU 21-14. Washington made some major changes after coming off a 2-9 sea- S portfolio son. The defense is changing from a regular 4-3-4 to a variable 4-3-4. This will make use of the lineback ers in rushing positions. Offensively the Huskies will be in the Houston Veer to utilize the size and quickness of the offensive line, but keeping a strong passing game that they have established over the past few years. This will be the third straight team the Aggies have played that run a veer-type offense. Country Center Bryan, Texas Carl Bussells ~iamond Room * 3731 E. 846-4708 29th The first battle of the Southwest Conference football war will be viewed on TV by most of the nation, as Texas Tech takes on the Longhorns in Lubbock at 1 p.m. Saturday. This game between last year’s champ and runner-up prom ises excitement and it will be televised in 30 states. All- American fullback Roosevelt Leaks will start at halfback for Texas, because freshman Earl Campbell refuses to relinquish the fullback position. Campbell and Gralyn Wyatt, a freshman halfback, have highlighted the Texas ground attack thus far this season. Tommy Duniven has been doing an adequate job of filling the shoes of Joe Barnes at quarterback for the Raiders. He has thrown the ball 21 times for 14 completions and a 66.7 percen tage. This game should exhibit the renewed strength of the S WC. Arkansas and Texas A&M both have proved their merits against powerful non-conference teams, defeating USC and LSU. The SWC fracas of 1974 is going to be a dandy. Last week was a disaster for sports forecasters across the country and I was no exception with a 3-7. I’ve become so leary of upsets until I almost picked Baylor against Oklahoma State. Arkansas upset USC, and Oklahoma State upset Arkansas; get it? So, with courage I will proceed to pick this week’s SWC contests. SMU has the misfortune of playing No. 1 rated Ohio State Saturday. The Buckeyes have quarterback Cornelius Greene and a couple of Griffins. Enough said. OHIO STATE BY 30 The Texas Longhoins may field its fleetest offense ever against Texas Tech which has running back Larry Issac, and a well balanced offense. Texas leads the conference in rushing defense and the Raiders are second. Tech is hungry for a conference crown, but Texas leads the all-time series 20-3. TEXAS BY 3 LSU is going to be awfully mad when they hit the field Saturday with memories of their loss to the Aggies last week. Rice doesn’t have the material to prevent the Tigers from taking it out on them. LSU BY 20 I’m sure you all know that Texas A&M soundly defeated powerful LSU last week. If you don’t, it’s for one of two reasons: you don’t know what football is or you’re in a coma. Words of that game have been ringing all the week. Being very objective, I am absolutely convinced that the Aggies have reached the point where they can provide stiff competition to any collegiate football team in America. A&M is second in the nation in rushing offense averaging 425 yards per game and 9th in total offense with a 455-yard norm. They lead the SWC in rushing offense, total offense, total defense and pass defense. The Huskies has won both their games this season boasting a strong passing attack, but the “Hawks” of the Aggie secondary rank fourth nationally and let us not forget that Texas A&M is the No. 9 team in the nation. A&M BY 17 patrick came off the bench against Iowa State in the second quarter to lead the Huskies to victory. Coach Jim Owens said he will start Fitzpat rick in place of junior Chris Rowland who had problems last Saturday in generating an attack. “It appears that this should be our toughest test of the season so far,” Owens said. “We re going to be ready for them and I can guarantee you that it is going to be an excellent ball game.” m 9 M®MS Fitzpatrick will be joined in (lie backfield by halfback Greg Smitk, f ullback Willie Hendricks and flan- kerback Ken Conley. Hendricksm for 148 yards in 21 carries withouti loss against Iowa State last week The Huskies ran up 504 yards offen sively in their 31-28 victory. Scott Phillips, a sophomore ceiver, caught four passes last weel for 85 yards to lead Washingtons receiving corps. Defensively, the Huskies are led by All-American candidate Daw Pear at defensive tackle. Safel) Steve Lipe picked off three lowi State passes in a brilliant showd secondary play. The Aggies will be going into tb game without the assistance of de fensive end Paul Hulin. Hulinim jured a knee in the LSU ganreanij will be out at least a week. Last week a number of top ranked teams found themselves on the|« end of the scoreboard. The Aggies are good, but not good enough togs into the game mentally unprepared The Ags will need to keep the of- fense moving and the defensetougl to beat the Huskies. It shouldb quite a battle. 1 custom house has beads and shells turquoise jewelry handmade pottery When you need a calculator- you need it now. No waiting for delivery.
