WASHINGTON (AP) — The House approved a compromise bill on Tuesday authorizing establish ment of a national park in the Big Thicket area of Texas. The bill goes to the Senate. The measure, worked out in a com promise between the House and Senate Interior Committees, would create a national park of approximat- ley 85,000 acres. The Senate had approved a bill earlier this year that would have created an approximately 100,000-acre preserve. The original House bill, also pas sed earlier this year, gave the In terior Department authority to quickly acquire the land under a formula known as “legislative tak ing.” The Interior Department is responsible for the national parks. The Senate objected to the “legis lative taking” plan and it was drop ped in the compromise measure. Instead, the Secretary of the In terior is directed to acquire the land, compensating its current owners, over the next five to six years.
