Pag© 12 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1974 Bob Smith only Aggie to have 1,000 yd. season Bean looks for 1,000 yards Since Texas A&M fielded its first football team in 1894, the school has produced only one player who has rushed for more than 1,000 yards in a season—Bob Smith in 1950. But another name could be added to that category in 1974—Bubba Bean. “Every running back would like to gain 1,000 yards,” Bean says. “But mainly I would like to help our team to a championship.” Last year at Clemson, he broke for a 78-yard touchdosn jaunt and finished the afternoon with 204 yards as the Aggies took a 30-15 vic tory. The 6-foot, 195-pound junior has come a long way from his high school days at Class AA Kirbyville in East Texas where he set state scor ing and rushing records. He step ped into the Aggie lineup as a starter in the season opener as a freshman, but he has learned a great deal since then. “I thought college running was just like high school running, ” Bean said. ‘T thought you could just dance around and get by. But I learned you might as well just go ahead and run, because there are other guys just as fast. Now I like to issue punishment instead of taking it.” Bean carried the ball 68 times as a freshman and gained 253 yards for a creditable 3.7 average. He made tremendous improvement as a sophomore, rushing 112 times for a team-leading 711 yards. His 6.3 yards per carry tied with teammate Skip Walker as the best in the Southwest Conference. Bean had a great spring and an excellent preseason practice. “Bubba is prepared mentally, phys ically and in every regard to have a good year,” coach Emory Bellard said. “He knows what he is doing now. bubba is an exceptional tal ent. ” In his quest for 1,000 yards, Bean has company in backfield mate Skip Walker who rushed for 618 yards last year. But each has his own dis tinctive style. “Skip takes short steps and I take long strides,” Bean says. Bean ranks second in nation rushing The Aggies head for Baton Rouge this weekend with some impressive statistics. In the first weekly na tional statistics release, the Aggies are near the top in almost every category. Bubba Bean, the Aggies leading rusher in the 24-0 win over Clem son, with 182 yards, ranks second nationally in rushing. Bean also ranks 12th in all-purpose running. Junior running back Skip Walker is tied for ninth in scoring. Walker tal lied 12 points in the opener. Teamwise, the Aggies’ 488 yards total offense ranks fourth nationally. 434 yards rushing ranks the Ags fifth. The same yardage is a new school record for A&M. Defensively, the Aggies rate sixth after allowing only 164 yards in the opener. The team is tied for first in the scoring defense category after allow ing no score by the Tiger offense. Eight other teams also scored shut outs. In the Southwest Conference the Aggies lead in total offense and de fense and rushing offense and de fense. Bean leads the conference in rushing. Running back teammates Bucky Sams is third with 122 yards and Skip Walker is eighth with 86 yards. Bean, toting a 10.1 yards per carry average, leads the conference also in total offense. Mike Jay, reserve quarterback, who was thought to be out of com mission for two weeks, limped back to practice Wednesday. Jay, who was kicked by a horse Sunday and suffered thigh bruises, returned with only a slight limp. He will be available for action in Saturday’s game if needed. No. 2 cornerback Charlie Arndt was injured in Wednesday’s prac tice session at Kyle Field. Arndt was taken to a hospital for X-rays. A&M trainers feared that Arndt might have suffered a broken collarbone. Otherwise practice sessions went smooth as the Aggies rehearsed their offensive and defensive as signments for the annual Tiger den battle in Baton Rouge.
