Page 8 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28. 1974 Pinned hip keeps girl off of varsity BATTALION CLASSIFIED Linda Alston, 17, broke into tears Monday when she was informed’ that surgery on her hips had been postponed, badly decreasing the chance that she’ll ever be able to play high school varsity football. “I was mostly mad,” she said. “People will think I lied.” Linda, the only girl of 17 players on the Altus-Denning High School team, had been working out as a linebacker and running back. She was scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday to remove steel pins from her hips. The pins were installed about two years ago to prevent the hip bones from slipping out of the sockets. Doctors informed her Monday that the operation had to be put off until mid-September because of a more critical case that demanded immediate attention. Her surgeon, who asked to re main anonymous, said that after surgery, it would be six to eight weeks before Linda could support her full body weight. By the time she had fully reco vered, the Owls nine-game season would have ended. The season opener will be Sept. 6 with the finale being Nov. 1. Linda, 5-11 and 163 said she has received telephone calls from all over the country after it was known that she was a member of a boy’s team. “After all this, what will people think if I don’t play?” Linda said. “I hate not to. It makes me mad that we haven’t already gotten the pins taken out.” Linda said she would talk to her doctor about the probability of play- WANT AD RATES One day 5* per word «« per word each additional day Minimum charge—75e Classified Display $1.00 per column inch each insertion DEADLINE 3 p.m. day before publication OFFICIAL NOTICE WORK WANTED HELP WANTED FOR SALE Official notices must arrive " ladline of the day preceding publicati ices mu of Student Publicati 1 P- ive in the Office ons before deadline of Experienced typists, reasonable. 846-8333. The doctor appeared skeptical about her playing with the pins still set. The danger of injury would be too great, he said. Linda’s mother, Mrs. W. A. Als ton, said she was upset about every thing, but that it could not be helped. “Linda’s been mad at me all morning,” she said. “I got the worst end of it. She was mad and yelling about everything, that people wouldn’t think she meant it.
