Filming starts next week in waters off Catalina Island. “Diaphus, which the Oceanog raphy Department acquired this spring and has already been on two major cruises, will be the primary sub in the 90-minute movie. New laser detects pollu tion Anthrax claims 200 Texas cattle AUSTIN, Tex.—Oklahoma tem porarily stopped movement of Texas cattle into the neighboring state due to an outbreak of dread anthrax in Falls County. About 200 animal carcasses have been burned in the county since the anthrax quarantine was imposed June 28. The quarantine covers only that portion of the county east of the Brazos River. A US DA spokesman said “sus pected” cases were discovered in surrounding Texas counties and in an Oklahoma City stockyard. Annual Health Commission offi cials recommended continued vac cination of cattle in Falls, McLen nan, Leon,Freestone, Robertson, Bell, Milam, and Limestone Coun ties. They were optimistic about control of the outbreak. Oklahoma first placed an embargo on Texas cattle, then limited it to movement from the eight counties. About 300,000 cattle were scheduled for vaccination in the Central Texas area, and only 250,000 doses of the vaccine were initially available. An estimated 110,000 head of animals were in the quarantined zone. Forty-one roadblocks were established to prohibit movement. Texas National Guard, the De partment of Public Safety and the State Department of Agriculture as sisted in efforts to control spread of the disease. The U. S. Coast Guard is getting a jump on water pollution. Wednesday they came to the TAMU campus for the trials of a new laser device developed by A&M scientists to detect oil and other hazardous materials on the water. The device employs two lasers and an optical sighting device. It was hand-crafted by a team from the Remote Sensing Center, a division of the Texas Engineering Experi ment Station. The Coast Guard-funded project initially is designed to be mounted on bridges and other devices over the water to monitor rivers and har bor waters. Head of the team. Bill Hulse exp lained that “the device employs a blue and a red laser to check the surface and subsurface of the water and detect what’s suspended in it. Oil and other materials in the water will do certain things to the signal that will alter the return. The lasers make use of the machine possible in nearly all weather conditions. “The sensor’s electronic signals will be turned into digital words which will be passed into a compu ter that will tell us what is going on in the water,” Hulse said. “Going even further, these monitors from over a large area could be linked to a central facility to allow central processing for a pic ture of conditions in a large area,” he said. “We hope also to add more wavelengths and perhaps a white light source. The additional wavelengths would allow us to de tect a variety of things in the water like algae and plant growth. The white light source would give a spectrum that could possibly enable the detection of chemical com pounds.” RN needed full time on 11 to 7 shift. Shift dif ferential plus mileage.
