Page 8 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY. JULY 10. 1974 Country Cajun Kershaw fiddles for j crowd (Continued from page 1) Heartaches by the Number, Trou bles by the Score”. Promptly at 6 p.m. Steve Fromholz opened the most frenzied evening of the picnic. As the sun went down, cheers welcomed Linda Hardgrave, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and B. W. Stevenson. In the midst of the excitement, the audience re ceived an unexpected surprise. Rus sell took the microphone and went into a monologue about the almost total nonexistence of blacks at the festival which resulted in the ap pearance of Wolfman Jack, idolized disc jockey of the ’50’s. After nightfall, dressed in white, with blond hair streaming from the familiar cowboy hat, Michael Mur- . phy sang for his idol, famed Indian chief Geronimo. “Geronimo’s Cadil lac” tells of the injustices done to the Indians and their land. of the stage to the other to the tune of “Diggy Diggy Lo.” His fiddle, his eyes and his body never stopped moving. One girl re marked, “I don’t really remember seeing him. Just a flash of red and that fiddle that never quit. ” Friday ended with Willie singing to a crowd with adulation in their eyes. He was joined by Russell, Ker shaw, Freida and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It was 11:15 p.m. in L.A. and 3:15 a.m. in New York but at a picnic in Texas, time had no mean ing. on Nashville Skyline, played a mix ture of hard rock that soon melted down to a progressive country end ing. Day three TOTALLY OPPOSITE from the quiet country gospel of Murphy, was that “Ragin’ Cajun” Doug Kershaw, with his mad fiddle. Kershaw, in a red velvet suit flashed from one end SATURDAY MORNING fewer people were camped out at noon. The sun, the beer and some bad THC had taken its toll. It resem bled the theory of survival of the fit test. Saturday’s schedule of performers even differed from those of the pre vious days. For the first time during the picnic, hints of rock music emi- nated from the 24,000 watt speakers. Barefoot Jerry, whose career in cludes back-up group for Bob Dylan DAVID ALLEN COE and Willis Allen Ramsey both performed that evening after opening the picnic with Nelson on the 4th. While crew hands were preparing the stage for the next set, whoops and hollers came from the crowd as they slowly spied Billy Joe Shaver kneeling at the far right of the stage talking to the audience. Minutes later he was at the mike, giving it his all. Halfway through his second piece, Sammi Smith joined him, to the delight of the crowd. Shaver left the crowd in an ap propriately excited mood, ready to hear Doug Sahm, “The Texas Tor nado.” Sahm is one of those rare per formers that is incomparable to any other. One can sense his complete sense of freedom and relaxation on stage. He actually reminds the on looker of a guitar picking tornado. Rick Nelson, doing a good job of dropping his Ozzie and Harriet stereotype, sent the crowd dancing with “Hello, Marylou, Goodbye Heart.” To wrap up the picnic, David Carradine, star of the Kung Fu series, sang well past the 11 p. m. curfew. Joined by many artists that per formed during the picnic. Nelson sang farewell to all the hardy folks that had experienced the three days of country music. Those who had predicted another. Woodstock may have been right, for only the visible effects of a three day festival can be recorded. The atmos phere of thousands of people brought together for continuous music is an intangible that can only be recorded in the soul of those who experienced it. Grove schedule Friday, “Cat Ballou” (Lee Marvin, Jane Fonda, Michael Callan, Nat King Cole) A Western romp telling the story of a “female Jesse James”. Starring Jane Fonda as Catherine (Cat) Bal lou. Lee Marvin won an Academy Award as the best actor for his per formance as the drunkest gunfighter in the West. THE BOY from the “Garden Party” appeared late Saturday night.
