The Criminal Jus tice branch of the Brazos Valley De velopment Council is in charge of both the CJD grant and payment of teletype bills. “We couldn’t live without it. It’s invaluable. It’s our ‘bread and but ter’,” said Lt. Casper, of the Bryan Police Department. Use of the teletype is fairly com plex although response is rapid (15 seconds to two minutes). For in stance, a policeman sees a suspicious-looking car on the side of the road. He reports the license number to the dispatch who then teletypes that number to the De partment of Public Safety. There, the owner and any police records are traced through a computer and the data is returned. The same proce dure is used for traffic violators and criminal offenders.
