Texas ran away with the champ ionship with 182 points but the Ag gies easily outdistanced third-place SMU, 73-54, on Rice’s cinder track Saturday. TVkM’s tracksters captured four first places, double the victories last year, while Doug Brodhead was the high point man of the meet with 20 points. Half of Brodhead’s total came from his victory in the 440-yard dash, crossing the tape in 47.2. His win surprised nearly everybody, not least of all defending champion Don Sturgal of Texas, finishing sec ond at 47.8. Brodhead added another eight points by finishing second in the 220-yard dash behind four-time champion Joe Bouncy of SMU. Brodhead’s time of21.0 was enough to qualify him for the NCAA meet in June. Brodhead also picked up a point in both the 440-vard and mile re lays. Both relay teams finished fourth. “I was really pleased with Doug’s performance,’’ said track coach Charlie Thomas. “I think Doug may have inspired the rest of the team with his outstanding running. ” Scottie Jones defended his championship by winning the 120-yard high hurdles with a time of 14.0. Jones won last year with a wind-aided 13.5 after placing fourth his freshman year. Bill Newton broke the AScM re cord in the javelin with a toss of 237-5 as he notched the first win for the Aggies in the event since Dan Meadows in 1965. His throw was just eight inches short of qualifying him for the NCAA meet but he has two meets left in which to improve. Defending pole vault champion David Peterek suffered a bit of mis fortune as he broke his pole during warmups and was unable to clear a height. Freshman teammate Brad Blair became the fourth Aggie victor winning with a height of 15-0. Freshman Shifton Baker was sec ond in scoring for the Aggies, grab bing 12 points with third places in the 120-yard high and 440-yard in termediate hurdles. “I think the whole squad per formed great,” said assistant coach Ted Nelson. “I think we’ve put to rest any doubts anyone may have had about us earlier this year.” FOR THE GREAT WELCOME.
