Student joins celebrities in ‘peace rug 9 preparation THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, MAY 15. 1974 Page 3 A “peace rug” being readied for the nation’s Bicentennial will include the handiwork of a Texas TAMU sophomore. Ann Harris, daughter of State Representative and Mrs. Ed J. Harris of Galveston, is needle pointing a 16-by-16-inch canvas for the rug to be used in the na tional celebration in 1976. Picked because of her skill by the National Needlepoint Guild of America’s board of directors, she has joined the project in such notable company as: Mrs. Alan Shepard, wife of astronaut Alan B. Miss Harris was also selected to represent the college students. “I’ve worked on it for several hundred hours but I’m still kind of scared to hand it in,” she said commenting on the caliber of the other contributors. “Being among them is pretty exciting.” The rug is planned - for comple tion by the 1976 Bicentennial. The United Nations will accept the rug formally upon completion. In the meantime, the Smithsonian has asked for the rug so it will always be the property of the United States. Operator dies in plane crash An accelerator operator at the Cyclotron Institute was killed Sunday when the light plane he was piloting crashed near Nor- mangee. Robert J. Reynolds, 25, of 508 Old College Road, was attempting to land at a small airstrip when his plane struck telephone lines near the runway. His father, Jeff B. Reynolds of Lufkin, was a , passenger in the plane. The elder Reynolds remains in the intensive care unit at St. Jo seph Hospital in Bryan following extensive surgery for injuries Sunday night. Reynolds is surviv ed by a wife, Connie, and a son. He is also survived by his par ents, a brother and sister, and grandparents. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Gib son Funeral Home in Lufkin, with the Rev. Charles Mcllveene officiating.
