ON LINDA LANE Mon.-Sat. 9-6 OPEN SUNDAY 10-6 822-2009 By TED BO RISK IE With Saturday’s annual Ma roon-White game, head football coach Emory Bellard will wrap up 1974 spring training with the brightest outlook he has been af forded since assuming coaching duties at A&M. With 21 or 22 starters and 45 of 51 lettermen returning from the 1973 team, Bellard can look for a team possessing a commod ity rare the last couple of seasons —experience. “We had a good spring train ing,’’ said Bellard. “We got the information we needed to get on individual players, worked a lot with fundamentals and conse quently we improved.” This year’s spring game will be a bit different from contests of the past. Instead of two teams, one Maroon and one White, all of the offense will be in White and all of the defense will be in Ma roon. The first half of the game will see the first team offense pitted against the second team defense and the second team offense lin ing up against the first team de fense. The second units will take on the rest of the squad in the second half while the third units will handle kickoffs, kickoff re turns and punt coverage. Sophomore-to-be David Walker will direct the first team offense. Taking over quarterback duties in the middle of the season last year, Walker used spring training to make his play smoother. “I would say I am probably most improved in my execution,” said Walker. “I feel real confi dent, pretty sure of myself.” I’m really looking forward to the rest of my career. “It’s hard to say how good we’ ll be next year but all I can say is that I’d hate to be on the op posing teams. We play some pret ty tough teams in the first four games but, being realistic, I’d think we should go into the Texas game with no more than one loss.” “Walker has a real outstand ing spring,” said Bellard. “He and WE REALLY MOVE OUR TAIL AND YOURS TO MIAMI FOR $ 75. CONTINENTAL AIRLINES The Proud Bird with the Golden Tail. has become consistent, solid correct.” With Walker in the backfield will be his namesake (though not related) Skip Walker, Bubba Bean and Bucky Sams. Skip Walk er and Bean both gained over 600 yards as sophomores last year while Sams is the only member of the first team who was not a starter yast season although he did see plenty of playing time. “We’ll still rely on our running game,” said David Walker, “but we’ll be thrownig the ball pretty much. We could see some throw ing on first downs Saturday.” When he throws, he’ll have a couple of the best targets in the conference in wide receiver Carl Roaches and tight end Richard Osborne. Center Ricky Seeker is the mainstay of the offensive line and the only senior on the first team offense. Seeker was a unanimous second-team all-con ference selection last year behind Texas all-America Bill Wyman, since graduated. Filling in the rest of the line will be tackles Glenn Bujnoch and Dennis Smel- ser and guards Billy Lemons and Bruce Welch. “We’ve learned a lot this spring,” said Lemons. “We’re (the line) working together as a team. We know what to do and we know we can do it so the only thing left is to go out on the field next fall and do what we're sup posed to do.” Linebacker Ed Simonini leads the defensive charges, all return ing starters from the No. 1 de fense in the SWC last year. Si monini was a unanimous selection for SWC defensive player of the year and made the Associated Press’ second team all-America squad. He will be joined at line backer Saturday by Kenny Strat ton and Garth Ten Napel. In the front four will be Don Long and Paul Hulin at ends and Ted Lamp and Warren Trahan at tackles. Pat Thomas and Tim Gray are the cornerbacks while James Daniels and Jackie Wil liams occupy the safety slots. |)lunt i Nixon give a Mike Jay and David SL will split quarterback dutiflM 0 ^ 6 the second offense joined by),W* in backs Ronnie Hubby and (i Shar; Ballard and fullback Jerry mony c ore in the back field.
