Page 4 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 19T4 Building spirit is only part of yell leader job By T. By SALLY HAMILTON TAMU yell leaders do a lot more than yell. Much of the stu dent body only sees the yeT lead ers arousing spirit at athletic functions, but they have many other responsibilities. “Our main responsibility rests with the students,” says Head Yell Leader Griff Lasley, “Our responsibilities begin in the sum mer. I began the year working Driving meet Six winners led by George Mar tin captured trophies in the Texas A&M Sports Car Club autocross. More than 30 drivers entered the Saturday event. The autocross was conducted on the parking lot across Wellborn Road from Kyle Field. Martin, driving a Spitfire, post ed the fastest time of the event. He turned the two-lap course in 1:09.5 minutes. Another Sports Car Clubs of America driver, Jim Ray, piloted his Porsche 911 the two circuits in 1:10.7. TAMSCC timed the course at 35 seconds a lap. Martin and Ray won their re spective classes. Cars were en tered in classes according to cubic centimfeters displacement. The only woman entrant, Imo- gene Chamberlain in a BMW 2002, had the seventh best time, at 1:16.25. It’s important to work with them, to know that they are people too. We then can relate better to the student body, than to just start out cold and have no feeling for it.” The yell leaders have as part of their responsibilities the duties to decide upon and handle their own budget. The greatest part of the yell leader budget goes to Bonfire. Expenses run from per sonal expenses to having money to care for Reveille, the school mascot. The Athletic Department also helps with expenses for shoes and sweaters. Yell leaders co-ordinate be tween the student body and the athletic department. “We co-ordinate things like the spirit line between Henderson Hall and Kyle Field and the Boot Line at half-time,” said Bobby Sykes, senior yell leader. “A thing that is real insignificant, or may seem so, but is very im portant, is that it is our respon sibility to see that the gates of Kyle Field are unlocked for Mid night Yell Practice.” “Our influence is probably felt more at basketball games than any other time,” said Lasley. He spoke of the responsibility of a yell leader to maintain order and an air of good sportsmanship in the student spectators. “When there is something like booing present, that’s when we have to exhibit leadership and presence of mind,” said Lasley. One of the responsibilities of an Aggie yell leader is to set an example, and to stress the good merits of an Aggie. “There are certain traditions to be upheld,” commented Mark McLean, senior yell leader, “the idea for instance that Aggies stick together, especially when they graduate from here. “You cannot come out with po litical viewpoints,” he continued, “because that is not your capa city as a yell leader. A yell lead er is elected to represent the stu dent body.” “We as yell leaders must strive to get the student body to realize what is and what would be good for the Aggie spirit,” added Sykes. “The yell leader does not lead the student body in yells, but One leads the yells of the studeisj, body. He should be a man o! us or strong character, because he re the si fleets a student body that j the c strong in character.” , B — “I hate to see the contest ~ yell leader become a popularitfL-'^''' contest,” said Lasley. “I’d nrati J,** * rather see them elected on thet;.! -' love for A&M and desire to better sportsmanship than on ke| Ed ui ing able to tell a groady fable a: T Midnight Yell Practice.” Aj SKAGGS ALBERTSONS DRUGS & FOODS WE CARE ABOUT YOU.. .RELY ON IT! 9 A.M. - 12 MIDNIGHT MONDAY - SATURDAY 9 A.M. - 10 P.M.
