Would you please print in your Battalion column the current Texas laws on abortion? Also, where could a girl go for help if she was considering having an abortion? A. On 22 January, 1973, following a Supreme Court decision, all Texas’ (and all other state’s) abortion laws became unconstitu tional and, therefore, unenforceable. The Texas State Legislature considered several possible amendments and changes in the law in an attempt to make it constitutional. However, no abortion law passed during the last session of the legislature. Thus, Texas has no enforceable criminal abortion statute at this time, and the status of abortion is that of any other medical procedure: That is, the patient must grant her informed consent to an abortion, which must be performed by a licensed physician, preferably in a reputable medical facility. The decision as to whether an abortion is done rests entirely with the pregnant woman providing her pregnancy is under 6 months duration. If the pregnancy is under three months duration the woman may seek an abortion without any interference from the state. If the pregnancy is in the third to the sixth month, the state may control only the conditions under which the abortion is done. If the pregnancy is between the sixth month and anticipated time of delivery, the state may, if it wishes, restrict abortion to those cases in which the life or health of the mother is in danger. The positions of the Texas Medical Association are in basic agreement with the Supreme Court decision and the above recommendations. To help, if she is considering an abortion, a girl may consult the high school counseling service or one of the University Student Health Service physicians or her own private physician. (Col. Ret.) The service is available at the University Health Center (845- 1511, ext. 41) and is provided by an all-volunteer staff, headed by Dr. Claude Goswick, UHC head, and Dr. Patricia Self, as sistant dean of women. The 12 volunteers contribute a morning or afternoon a week to answering phone calls or manning an office in the Health Center. The office is open from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. during the week. “The primary concern of this service is to meet student needs,” said Dr. Self. “Hundreds of stu dents have asked us for this.” The only similar service in Bryan- College Station, the Family Planning Clinic,, will not at this time aid A&M students, as it is concerned with low-income fam ilies. Currently, A&M’s counseling service is operating without a budget, but Dr. Self is seeking financial resources. In addition, she is examining services offered at other college campuses, and has already seen similar faeilities at the University of Texas and University of Houston. Aggie Cinema Movies that aroused social com ment will show Friday and Satur day in the Aggie Cinema. “Visions of Eight” and “Sky jacked” are billed for the Rudder Theater in a double feature, announced Chairman Tom Wheeler. A dramatic look at the 1972 Olympics, “Visions of Eight” will show first Friday. “Sky jacked” leads off Saturday, also at 8 p.m. The latter was banned in sev eral U. S. cities. Officials con sidered “Skyjacked” too sugges tive of ways to highjack aircraft. Starring Charlton Heston and Yvette Mimeaux, it concerns the attempted diverting of a 707 for a flight to Moscow. “Visions of Eight” involves the work of eight directors from dif ferent countries. They focused on various aspects of the Olym pics. Along with closeup studies of the pole vault, decathlon, 100- meter dash, marathon and women contestants, the production also features studies on athletes who did not win, pre-start rituals, and a woman director’s views of the weight-lifting strong men.
