Page 6 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13. 1974 Cindermen prepare to lose in Houston, host SMU, TCU BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES One day ....... oe per word 4i: per word each additional day Minimum charge—75c OFFICIAL NOTICE WORK WANTED FOR RENT By TED BORISKIE The A&M track squad opens its 1974 home season Saturday against SMU and TCU. The Aggies are coming off a disap pointing loss to the Rice Owls Satur day in a triangular meet with the University of Houston as the third team. The Owls gathered 68 points to 57 for the Aggies even though A&M had six wins to Rice’s five. Houston was third with 45 points and five wins. Saturday, the sprints will be the featured events as A&M and SMU possess the class of the SWC sprinters. In the 100-yard dash, Gene Pouncy has a wind-aided 9.2 to his credit which, coupled with an impressive win over world record holder Steve Williams and Olympian Don Quarrie in the Astrodome meet earlier this year, would probably rank him as favorite. However, A&M’s Charles Dawson came away winner at the Border Olympics, SAM DIERSCHKE the only time the two have met, and posted a 9.6, his best time of the year. TCU’s Bill Collins has run a wind-aided 9.4 but has been unable to defeat either Dawson or Pouncy whenever he has run against them. Sam Dierschke, who ran a 9.4 last year and finished second in the conference meet for the Aggies, will be running the century for the first time this year. Dierschke might be an upset winner as could A&M’s Carl Roaches, the best high school sprinter in the state two years ago, who is just coming back into shape in his premier season with the Aggie tracksters. Joe Pouncy has the best time in the conference this year with a wind-aided 20.8 but Dierschke has yet to lose at this distance this season. The speedster from Sealy has clocked a 21.4 while Collins has a 21.1 as his best. The 440-yard relay should be a real battle if the Aggies can keep the baton in circulation. A&M has failed to negotiate the final handoff for the past two weeks. The Aggie team of Gerald D’Ambrosio, Dierschke, Dawson and Scottie Jones has the SWC’s best time at 40.6 while the Mustangs have posted a 40.9. The SMU team of Mike Rideau, Rufus Shaw and the Pouncys won the SWC title last spring. Shaw has a 48.0 in the 440-yard dash while A&M’s Doug Brodhead has run a 48.1. TCU’s Lee Wiliams could also figure in the race. The javelin is shaping into a fierce contest as SMU’s Glenn Derwin faces Aggie Bill Newton for the second time this season. Derwin threw the lance 225 feet, 10 inches to win at the Border Olympics while Newton had to be satisfied with second and a toss of 210-10. Newton threw 216-4 to win at Rice last week and has a season’s best of 217-1. Mustang freshman Rick Goldback could surprise with a good throw as he presently owns the SWC’s third best mark of 203-3. The shot put will be one of the most hotly contested events of the afternoon as SMU’s Don Randall takes on A&M’s Craig Carter. Carter has the fourth best mark in the conference with a put of 54-0 but Randall is right behind him with a best of 53-6%. Carter put 53-10 last week against Rice and Houston. Knodel quits as Rice coach, Aggie considered for job HOUSTON UP> — Rice Univer sity Athletic Director A. M. Bale strated the search for a new bas ketball coach Tuesday with early emphasis placed on three assist ant coaches. Don Knodel, head basketball coach the past eight years, re signed suddenly Monday and an nounced he was retiring from coaching. The Owls finished this season with a 5-9 Southwest Con ference record after being picked unanimously for last place. Bale said assistant coaches George Mehaffey and McCoy Mc- Lemore both had expressed inter est in the job and a third assist ant, former Rice player Greg Wil liams, also would be considered. Mehaffey, a former player at A&M, has been on the Rice staff five years after coaching in the Houston school system. Mehaffey was drafted by St. Louis in the NBA after making All-SWC in 1957 but entered the Air Force instead.
