Page 2 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 1974 Listen Up Streaking penalty called too strong Editor: Last week when Dean Powell chose mandatory conduct proba tion as the punishment for the “misuse of ID cards,” I thought I had witnessed the greatest pos sible mockery of the principle of commensurate penalties. I was CADET SLOUCH by Jim Earle wrong. In a memorandum from his office Wednesday, Dean Pow ell announced that streaking is a grave offense that will hence forth carry the penalty of auto matic suspension from the Uni versity. Streaking may be frivo lous, ridiculous, or many other things, but it is certainly not a criminal offense on the level of selling drugs or grand theft, crimes with which it shares a common penalty. Two “logical” reasons put forth for this action were: a) any small children present on campus at 2:30 in the morning would have been exposed to the nude bodies of the streakers, and b) “wouldn’t the streakers have felt funny had their mothers been present during the streak?” I won’t mention the illogical reasons. Last week the Student Senate passed almost unanimously a res olution stating that a monetary fine only should be the penalty for first time offenders of the ID card policy. I would like to see a similar resolution recommending a more fitting penalty for streak ing, as well as some positive ac tion on these resolutions by the administration. I find it saddening that a man in Dean Powell’s posi tion of authority wields his power in such a harsh manner. It is with deep regret that I write this let ter. The Aggie crowd conducted itself in a manner that earned the re spect of all members of the Texas team. “Spirit of Texas”—a feeling of brotherhood that the founders of America had. Had a brief fight erupted in Austin, as it did momentarily in College Station at the end of the game, the Texas fans surely would have swarmed the court and de layed the conclusion of the game for several minutes. I believe therefore that the cap ital of the USA should be in Tex as, perhaps in friendly San An tonio. Albert Price San Antonio The Aggie crowd represented itself in the grand tradition of courtesy and spirit that has made A&M respected throughout the nation.
