Arciniega, Thornton
lead Ags over Baylor
By KEVIN COFFEY
Sports Editor
Joe Arciniega and John Thorn
ton tossed in season high point
totals to lead the Texas Aggies
to a 94-72 Southwest Conference
basketball win over Baylor last
night.
Thornton scored 31 points and
pulled in 17 rebounds as the Ags
avenged an earlier defeat by the
Bears in Waco.
Arciniega thrilled the 3,740
fans by scoring four points in
his final appearance before the
home crowd.
Randy Knowles ignited the Ags
in the second half, hitting eight
of his 25 points in the opening
five minutes of the final period.
Baylor managed to keep close
until Knowles’ barrage that put
A&M on top 63-46.
The Bears trailed 45-39 at half
time as A&M controlled the inside
game. BU’s big men, devastating
in the previous Baylor win, were
totally shutout by Jerry Mercer,
Cedric Joseph, Knowles and
Thornton. ,
A&M started the game in a
1-2-2 zone defense but Baylor’s
Tom Corley hit eight quick points
from his guard spot. Coach
Shelby Metcalf then switched the
Ags into an aggressive man to
man.
Thornton matched up with the
Bears’ high scoring forward
Charlie McKinney and shut him
out completely. Averaging over
18 points per game, the hurley
Baylor senior was held to nine
points and nine rebounds.
Gary McGuire’s 25 points, 17
rebound performance in Waco
must have irked the Ags as the
freshman post man was held to
10 points and just two rebounds.
Joseph blocked three shots in
the first half to assist in shutting
down the BU inside game.
A&M totally dominated the
backboards the first 20 minutes,
UT, Tech win;
SWC still tied
By The Associated Press
AUSTIN — Texas remained in
a tie with Texas Tech for the
Southwest Conference basketball
lead Tuesday night with a thor
ough 99-82 drubbing of Arkansas
behind Larry Robinson’s 26 points.
Senior guard Harry Larrabee
chipped in 22 points to aid the
Longhorn cause. Texas is now 10-
3 and travels to Waco Saturday
night to meet Baylor in the sea
son finale.
Arkansas led early in the game
26-18 but Dan Krueger’s jump
shot put Texas ahead to stay 32-
31.
Texas held at 46-37 halftime
lead. The ‘Horns increased the
margin to 73-56 only to have the
Razorbacks fight back with eight
unanswered points.
Arkansas’ Ricky Medlock kept
the Razorbacks in the game, hit
ting 18 of his 2& points in the first
half. Dean Tolson chipped in 21
points for the losers, who are now
5-8 in SWC play.
Texas hit 47 of 84 field shots
for 56 per cent while Arkansas
connected on 36 of 82 shots for
43.9 per cent.
The Longhorns shot 83 per cent
from the foul line while Arkansas
managed only 71 per cent.
Arkansas outrebounded Texas
51-37 but was guilty of 20 turn
overs to Texas’ eight.
FORT WORTH — Southwest
Conference co-leader Texas Tech
paced by Rick Bullock’s 41 points
defeated Texas Christian 77-66
here Tuesday night.
Bullock scored 21 points in the
first half to stake the Raiders to
a narrow 37-36 intermission lead.
However, Tech slowly pulled away
in the second half, twice leading
by as much as 15 points.
The outcome leaves the Red
Raiders 10-3 in SWC action and
sets the stage for a showdown
against SMU in Lubbock Satur
day afternoon.
Ted Jones paced TCU with 21
points while Jeff Wright added 14.
Grady Newton, with 10, was the
only other Tech player in double
figures.
DALLAS — Ira Terrell scored
22 points Tuesday night to lead
Southern Methodist to an 89-79
victory over Rice, the Mustangs’
seventh Southwest Conference
basketball triumph in a row.
The Mustangs, winning their
ninth game in 10 decisions, ran
their SWC record to 9-4, one game
behind league-leading Texas and
Texas Tech with one game left.
Rice fell to a 4-9 league mark.
Both team placed five men in
double figures. Following Terrell
for SMU were Rusty Bourquein
with 16 points and Jimmy Murphy
with 12. Scott Fisher led Rice
with 16 points, followed by Char
les Daniels with 14.
SMU went from a one-point
deficit to an 11-point lead midway
in the first half, holding Rice
without a bucket from 10:40 to
6:18 left in the half.
After a 45-34 halftime lead,
the Mustangs coasted in the sec
ond half.
handing Baylor a 29-11 pounding.
However, 12 turnovers in that
initial period kept the Ags from
pulling away earlier. The Aggies
finished wtih a 59-31 rebound
advantage. Joseph hauled in 11,
Knowles 10 to team with Thorn
ton’s 17.
Knowles completely frustrated
Corley. Sporting a four inch
height advantage, Knowles took
the smaller Baylor defender in
side to score almost at will.
Thornton hit 15 foot jump shots
from the corner with amazing
regularity. The junior college
transfer’s final surge put A&M
on top 86-66 with 2:38 remaining.
It seemed only fitting that
Arciniega should score A&M’s
final home points of the season.
Taking two great passes from
fellow senior Charlie Jenkins,
Arciniega cashed in on a lay-up
and 30 foot bomb for the finish
ing blows. j
James Weaver led the Baylor ;
attack with 16 points. Mike Luce
added 13 and Gary McGuire 10
for the Bears.
Baylor is now 12-12 on the i
season, 5-8 in conference action.
BU assistant coach Jim Haller
said emotions were the big differ
ence in the previous game with i
the Bears.
“A&M was up and really got
after it,” Haller said. “When the
Aggies get after it there isn’t a
team in the conference that can
stay with them physically.”
Haller was also quick to praise
Thornton. “He played as good
a game tonight as I’ve ever seen
in this conference,” he said.
“Thornton just killed us.”
Thornton credited the improve
ment of his outside shooting for
his impressive scoring of late.
“I’ve gained more confidence and
I feel more comfortable taking
the longer shots now,” said
Thornton. “In junior college I
played post and it took me a little
while to get used to being a
forward.”
Thornton said that the Aggie
strategy in defensing McKinney
was to give him the outside shot
and keep the hurley Bear off the
boards. “He just wouldn’t take
the 15 footer and everybody did
a good job of keeping him off the
boards,” Thornton said.
Senior C. W. Guthrie tallied
two points in his farewell appear
ance for the Aggies. Mercer
added 12, Joseph six, with Mike
Floyd, Ray Roberts and Webb
Williams four points each. Mike
Johnson hit two points to round
out the Aggie scoring.
