Page 4 Batt Movie Review THE BATTALION THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1974 PEANUTS By Charles M. PEANUTS Cons—quick, clever / this is lii I MY TERM 1 A PAPER... M V S By BRAD ELLIS The way “The Sting” was film ed demonstrates as well as the story does that confidence rack ets are really complicated mind games designed to fake situations so completely the victim doesn’t catch on to the robbery until too late. Director George Roy Hill uses the particulars of film language in a clever and purposeful man ner which continues a run of sim ilar movies from this director. Hill has a history of interest ing and delightful visual tech niques which he used in “Judge Roy Bean,” “Slaughterhouse Five,” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” The tech niques of the filming and editing help sustain the mood the con men work so hard to create. The theme seems to be that con games must be carefully constructed, and recreate reality well enough to trick someone into giving away their money. It looks like these characters just might get away with it this time. “The Sting” resembles “Butch Cassidy” as Paul Newman plays an older, established expert in his criminal specialty, who made a mistake once and is hiding out in Chicago. Robert Redford is a brash, young upstart, eager to get into the big time and revenge the murder of his mentor and for mer partner by conning a New York mobster so smoothly he doesn’t know he’s been conned. The total picture is set up early in the film and not referred to again, but acted out and portray ed as if the audience should know what’s happening. Without this basic information a certain in sight into the resolve of the char acters to play out the act with unfailing realism is lost. Hill uses visual techniques to initiate and conclude sequences that are not precisely straight forward; not the usual boring fade or dissolve. He uses cute things like turning a page to find the real world behind it and spe- Solzhenitsyn exiled (Continued from page 1) the greatest living writers, the Kremlin stripped him of his Sov iet citizenship, put him on a plane to West Germany and banished him to live abroad on the large fortune that his books have ac cumulated for him in Switzerland. The banishment decree said he was guilty of “systematically per forming actions that are incom patible with being a citizen of the Soviet Union and detrimental to the U.S.S.R.” U. S. Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, British Prime Min ister Edward Heath and a West German government spokesman said Solzhenitsyn and his family would be welcome to make his home in their countries. But Dr. Fritz Heeb, a Swiss lawyer who has been the custodian of his for tune, said he expected him to leave West Germany for a north ern European country. Soviet sources in Moscow claimed that Solzhenitsyn, al though he had vowed never to leave Russia voluntarily, had changed his mind and agreed to be exiled after talking with the state prosecutors Tuesday night and Wednesday. There was no immediate comment on this from Solzhenitsyn, but Boll told a tele vision interviewer the Russian WASHINGTON (/P) — A small Texas college has offered Alex ander Solzhenitsyn a professor ship on its yet unopened Wash ington, D.C., campus. The offer by Plano University, centered north of Dallas at Plano, was made Wednesday by John D. Hemenway, dean of the Washing ton campus. In a telegram dispatched to Fritz Heeb, Zurich attorney, and other friends of the Russian writ er, Hemenway said he had been assured by the State Department that visas could be issued to the writer and his family if they elected to come to Washington. Hemenway said in the telegram that Solzhenitsyn’s professorship would be located in Washington but that he would be free to travel and “continue your fight for all humanity at a pace and in the way you choose.” Plano University, established by Dr. Robert Morris, currently has an enrollment of about 450 students. bulletin board TONIGHT MARINE BIOLOGY ASSOCIATION will have Jack Anderson speak on “The Hazards of Oil Spills on Organisms” at 7:30 in Room 107' of the BSBE.
