Scheliem began his Wednesday noon speech entitled “How the dollar fell” as the sparce and scat tered audience, most of whom sat at the back of the room, began taking notes. The fate of the dollar has been the result of non-productive spending at home and abroad, ex plained Scheliem. He mentioned space-exploration and non-pro ductive welfare spending. “Wars are non-productive,” he said and added, “the U.S. has been notori ous for foreign wars.” The dollar rose in value re cently, Scheliem pointed out, but is now falling again. He was re- Campus Briefs Forsyth Center The Association of Former Stu dents will dedicate the Forsyth Alumni Center Saturday in fur therance of the educational goals of Texas A&M University. Named for James “Scotty” For syth, the center is the associa tion’s first “home” designed spe cifically for former students pro grams. Dedication ceremonies start at 10 a.m. in Room 226 of the Me morial Student Center. Guests will then move across the hall for the unveiling of a plaque naming the facility. Trip to Rice The Student Government has arranged for tickets and transpor tation for 40 people who want to go to the Rice basketball game on Tuesday, February 19. A chartered shuttle bus will leave at 5 p.m. and return after the game. The cost is $6 per per son. This includes the ride over and a $2.50 reserved seat ticket. A sign-up sheet on a first-come, first-served basis for those inter ested is located in the Student Government Office on the second floor of the MSC. Payment is due when signing. More trips may he possible if response is adequate. At Thurs day night, only six people have signed up. MSC furniture New buildings mean new furni ture here at A&M. In the past few weeks, the Me morial Student Center has seen so many desks and chairs moved in and out, that students may have wondered if the building was being vacated. “The old furniture was beaten- up looking, falling apart and there was a great deal more area to fill in the new offices,” said Don Powell, facilities manager. The old furniture will be used in the renovated part of the “C” until the furniture arrives for there, Powell said. At this point, the furniture will be turned over to surplus where other depart ments on campus can requisition it. If any furniture remains after a period of time it will be auctioned in open bidding. Anyone who wants the old furniture, will be able to purchase it then, Powell said. The cost of the new furniture moved in last week came to $43,- 390.23, “a small part of the total building’s cost,” said Wes Donald son, director of the Purchasing Department. “The University accepted bids for the furniture and we went with the lowest price,” Donaldson said. luctant to make any predictions or to commit himself to either optimism or pessimism on the dol lar’s behalf. The stability of the dollar is of international economic impor tance, Scheliem said. “I like the United States, and I am concerned about it.” A few of the older members of the audience asked questions. The students in the audience left with a clear enough knowledge to re late their notes to their class dis cussions. Texas repeal of time change gains support Getting up before the chickens was something few city folks ex pected to do until President Nixon proposed Daylight Savings Time as a response to the energy cri sis. Now it seems the chickens may be rising first again. Daylight Savings Time is in serious danger of being repealed. The attack is coming at both the state and federal levels where many government officials are far from convinced that DST is sav ing energy. A Friday news release from local State Representative Bill Presnal’s office indicated that Presnal had petitioned Governor Dolph Briscoe to exempt the Cen tral Time Zone area of Texas from DST. Thirty legislators have signed the petition, the news re lease said. Representative Ben Bynum of Amarillo has been polling state legislators on the matter, and has found 75 to 80 percent of those polled to be in favor of repeal. Tuesday, Governor Briscoe asked for legislation to abolish DST. He also stated that he felt the current federal legislation should be repealed. Texas is eligible to exemption from DST since it lies in two time zones. Federal legislation allows such a state to place itself entire ly in one time zone. Bills have been introduced in both houses of Congress to do away with DST. The Federal En ergy Offiqe is meanwhile asking for moyflotixpe to let DST prove itself.
