Bowlers pick 10 for road Ten TAMU students qualified as university representatives to a regional bowling tournament to be held Feb. 7-9. The tourney, an American College Unions-Intemational event, will be hosted by the University of South western Louisiana in Lafayette, La. The women’s team, determined in a tourney Saturday at the University Bowling Lanes, consists of five coeds. The top five and qualifying totals are; Janie Eberhardt of San Antonio, high bowler with a 1496 total for nine games; Terry Manning of Houston, 1457; Linda Benson of San Antonio, 1347; Pam Brown of Victoria, 1342 and Connie Polasek of Houston, 1260. The men’s team, aided by a record effort by Bill Kettler of Bryan, moved into second place right behind Houston in the Texas Intercollegiate Bowling Conference. Kettler totaled 1954 in nine games for a 217 average, best in the TIBC records. He finished with a 710 three- game average; Larry Galvin of Colombia averaged 209 by knocking down 1884 in nine games. Hal Vorland averaged 195 in eight games; Doug Ocker of Corpus Christi, 190 in nine games and Mitch Smith, 176 in six games. Men’s team members traveling to Lafayette for the regional tournament will be Kettler, Galvin, and Ocker. Also traveling will be Ray Scott of College Station and Artie Tanamachi of San Benito. Table tennis, billiards tourney held The Association of College Unions-Intemational held Billiards and Table Tennis tournaments in the University Center over the weekend. In the noon Saturday Billiards tourney only two coeds, Laura Anne Clark and Mary E. Jones, were daring enough to enter. In the best three out of five round, Clark outpocketed J ones to capture top honors in the tourna ment Both girls will travel to Lafayette, La. to compete in the regional tourney. The Table Tennis tournament was held Sunday at seven in the upper reaches of the University Center. First place honors went to Srisamorn Cheowtirakul. Nancy Anderson took second place. These two A&M coeds will also make the trip to the Lafayette regionals. Tourney entry deadline slated The annual intramural wrestl ing tournament will be held on the weekend of Feb. 18-22. Entries for the tourney are to be turned in at the Intramural Office at DeWare before Friday, Feb. 1 at five p. m. Weigh-ins will be held Feb. 11, from five to six p.m. The weight classes are: 126, 134, 142, 150, 158, 167, 177, 191 and unlimited. Professional, NCAA and AAU wrestlers are not eligible to compete. Ag-ex Bobby Nichols shot a three under par 69 in the final round of the Andy Williams-San Diego Open to break a third round deadlock with Rod Curl. Nichols drove away in a $5000 auto with a $34,000 check in his wallet for his four days labor. That’s about $400 an hour for golfing, sleeping, eating and resting. Jack Pardee, former Unebacker with the Los Angeles Rams and the Washington Redskins, and coach with the Redskins, was named as head coach and general manager of the new Washington-Baltimore franchise of the World Football League. The Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association are becoming the team in that league to beat. Mark Howe, who scored his 25th goal of the year last weekend, may fast replace dad as ‘Mr. Hockey’. As the second leading rookie scorer in the league, he is a leading contender for ‘Rookie of the Year’ honors. Women’s lib? Said an anonymous member of the TAMU girls basketball team, “I think we should get A’s in our classes just like all the jocks do.” Speaking of basketball, the top high school talent in the state is beginning to show. Schoolboy players to watch are All-American Earl Evans of Port Arthur Lincoln, Larry Harris of Dallas South Oak, Loddie Naymola of Clear Lake and the high-scoring Westchester duo of Dirk Hoyt and Jeff Swanson. Presently the best record in the state is owned by Corsicana High with 24 wins and no defeats. Next in line is McAllen High at 22-1. 1 would like to thank the fans in Lubbock for providing Shelby Metcalf with information for his Ph.D. and also for giving Mike Mistovich something to gripe about. Twice as many thanks go to the Aggies for not mimicking Tech fans in Saturday’s Rice game. The Quote of the Week is by Howard Laidlaw of the Rice Owls. “I never touched him,” said Laidlaw after disengaging his arms from John Thornton’s midsection. The Try Again Next Time award goes to the company which produces the 30-second ticker. The clocks decided to go on strike in two out of four SWC games played Saturday, in Austin and here at G. Rollie. And here’s the Referees box score for the TAMU-Rice game. Percy Penn and Lavon Boyette were the officials for the aggressive game. Between the two they managed to whistle 52 personals and a technical. Percy Penn gets brownie points for being amiable and receives this weeks nomination for Referee of the Year.
