Rice Coach A1 Conover’s crew was about the only unpredictable thing in the conference this year. Texas won the title for the sixth consecutive campaign just as it was supposed to and Texas Tech was the runnerup. But Rice in third place? You could have found a time getting 50-to-l odds, was. generally picked to finish in the SWC cellar. Despite a low-scoring offense, the Owls have defeated Arkan sas, A&M and Texas Christian on back-to-back Saturdays with a stout defense and the long-dis tance lightning of kickoff return specialist Carl Swierc, “It’s hard to believe Rice has won three games with just a to tal of 18 first downs, but that shows you what all-effort will get you,” says Baylor Coach Grant Teaff. Baylor has fallen on hard times this autumn and rests in the cellar where the Owls were supposed to finish. The Bears are 0-6 and desperately need a vic tory. “We need something with a good taste to end the season on,” Teaff says. Rice is 3-3 and a touchdown favorite. Southern Methodist, should Rice lose to Baylor, could tie Ar kansas for third place with a 3-3-1 record if the Owls lose and the Mustangs defeat Texas Chris tian in Dallas Saturday. Arkan sas has finished the season. SMU is a two touchdown pick over the luckless Horned Frogs who will be playing their last game under Coach Billy Tohill. Tohill was fired with two weeks to go in the season effective with the SMU game. TCU is 1-5 for the SWC sea son. The SWC season will not offi cially end Saturday because Tex as meets Nebraska New Year’s Day in the Cotton Bowl and Tex as Tech plays Tennessee in the Gator Bowl at Jacksonville, Fla., Dec. 29.
