ALLEN Oldsmobile Cadillac SALES - SERVICE "Where satisfaction is standard equipment” 2401 Texas Ave. 823-8002 A group of black youth are jok ing with each other all dressed in choicest Afro-American finery. A girl is leaning against a wall with her cheek resting on her folded hands, softly signing to herself. All are wearing buttons featur ing a smiling, cherubic, slightly chubby face. The snack bars of the Astro dome have been transformed in units of “Divine Sales” where one can purchase a Guru Maharaj Ji T-shirt for $2.75, a holy fam ily poster for $1.25 or stationery for $1.00. Pennants are a quarter, bumper stickers fifty cents, in cense seventy-five cents, and, if irritated by the rock music, ear plugs can be had for a half a buck. As Blue Aquarius plays, atten tion is focused on a boy sitting on a 14-foot blue and white throne on a 10,000 square foot stage. He is flanked by members of his holy family, thousands of flowers, two lakes and three waterfalls spurting 5,000 gallons of water. The floor of the Dome is cover ed by a red carpet upon which fol lowers anxiously wait or dance to the music. The music builds to a crescendo. The choir sings “Hear him speak” and “We love him.” The Lord’s Prayer appears on the Astrodome scoreboard and then the words “When When When When?” followed by “Now! Now! Now! Now! Now! ” The music ends and now it is all his show. He starts by telling the audi ence he is not going to speak about Watergate because it isn’t important. What is important is world peace. “Peace is everywhere,” he says. “Perfect love and harmony are everywhere. Perfection is within you inside of you.” What is most striking about the young guru is the rapport he establishes with his audience. His followers are primarily young and he toys with rock music and “hip” language to relate with them. He throws in an occasional “right on” or “far out” and says things like “That ain’t no lie.” He flaunts his youth and realizes it is his key to success. With the average age of the world contin ually decreasing no guru will gain wide acceptance if he is an old man who speaks in mystic tones. “Peace is infinite and contin uous,” he says. “All you need is wit' in sight of you; all solutions to nd the misery of the world.” He speaks for 65 minutes and then leaves the approximately 20,- 000 in attendance to themselves. Coming from the comfort of the Astrodome and the perfect mas ter’s presence into the humid, smog-filled parking lot, a group sings “He gives us more than we could ever want.” Pickets carry signs which say “60,000 Deceived Already” and “The Guru is a Messenger of Sa tan.” The people leaving the stadium scarcely notice them. Some walk along joking to each other. Others speak in hushed tones. Others are crying. Millenium ’73 continues through Saturday with the Guru Maharaj Ji scheduled to speak at 8:30 each night. Pool Shark Exhibits Skill A free exhibition of pocket bil liards by the five-time world champion, Jimmy Caras will be provided in the Memorial Student Center Tuesday. The demonstration, sponsored by the Recreation Committee, will be given from noon to 2 p.m. and 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Caras gained acclaim as the “Boy Wonder of the Pocket Bil liard World” in 1927 when he de feated the world billiard cham pion Ralph Greenleaf in an exhibi tion match at the age of 17. In 1932, his first year of com petition, he was second behind Greenleaf in the World’s Pocket Billiard Championship. Caras won the world champion ship in 1936, 1938, 1939, 1949 and 1967. He was national champion in 1962 and 1963. Caras’ win in 1967 was a come back after an 18-year lapse. He won it when he was 58.
