THE BATTALION Friday, November 9, 1973 College Station, Texas Page 3 Battalion Sports Special Aggies Search for Winning Season SMU Here Saturday for 1:30 p.m. By KEVIN COFFEY Sports Editor The Texas Aggies, fighting for only their second winning season since 1956, battle a revenge minded bunch of Southern Methodist Mustangs Saturday at Kyle Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p. m. A&M stands 4-4 on the season with three games remaining. After SMU, the Aggies travel to Houston for Kice and meet Texas at home. Besides trying to hault a mid-season los ing streak, SMU will be trying to get re venge for two straight losses to the Aggies. Saturday is SMU’s seniors last chance at the Aggies, the first three encounters being un successful. To highlight the youth movement evident in the SWC this year, two freshmen will start at quarterback. This is the first time in the SWC’s 59 years that both teams started frosh in the important role. Quarterback just may be the toughest position on the field and this is more than true for a Wishbone signal caller. Ricky Wesson is thrust into that position for SMU because of a shoulder separation of regular Keith Bobo. David Walker holds the reigns to the Aggie T-Bone. SMU stopped Texas twice with goaline stands while building a 14-0 half time lead. Texas came back for a 42-14 win. “If you can stop guys like Rosey Leaks with less than a yard, you’re tough,” said Bellard. David Walker will be joined by Skip Walk er, Bubba Bean and Alvin Bowers in the Ag gie backfield. Bowers is A&M’s leading ground gainer with 534 yards. The offensive line, perhaps the most im proved spot for the Ags this season, is anchored by center Ricky Seeker. Seeker might be a all-conference performer any other year but UT’s Bill Wyman appears to lead in the category. Freshman Billy Lemons, A&M’s right guard, is again in for a real test. Saturday he faces Louie Keltcher, a all-SWC player last year. Lemons has also faced all-confer ence shoe-in Ecomet Burley of Texas Tech and Charlie Davis of TCU since taking over for the injured Bud Trammell. Glen Bujnoch and Dennis Smelser are the tackles. Holding down the receiving duties for the Ags will be tight end Richard Osborne and wide receiver Carl Roaches. Defensively, A&M’s front four ready to meet SMU’s talented running game are Don Long and Paul Hulin at the ends with Ted Lamp and Warren Trahan in the tackle spots. Ed Simonini, Garth Ten Napel and either John McCrumbly or Ken Stratton are slated to go at linebacker. The Aggies will have a new face in the defensive backfield as Charlie Arndt replaces the injured Tim Gray. Pat Thomas and James Daniels and Jackie Williams join Arndt but they don’t expect to see many balls thrown by the Mustangs.
