THE BATTALION
Grandson of German WW II Flier Plans Air Force Career ip
HE
Flying is a blood factor of
Emile Sendral, TAMU senior from
Puerto Rico.
Sendral’s grandfather flew with
the German Luftwaffe in World
War II.
Emile has a course plotted for
a career in the U. S. Air Force,
through the Air Force ROTC pro
gram at Texas A&M University.
The aerospace engineering ma
jor is a cadet captain in the Ag
gie Corps of Cadets, Fourth Group
adjutant and flies in an Air
Force contracted flight program
at the university.
Sendral lacks two dual cross
country and two solo cross coun
try flights completing the Flight
Instruction Program. It will en
able the student born in Haiti to
get a private license.
But more important, to Emile
and the U. S. Air Force, the pro
gram “weeds out” pilot category
cadets with no aptitude for fly
ing.
“I’ll try it for a six-year tour,”
the son of a Puerto Rico exporter
said. “If it works out. I’ll prob
ably make a career of the Air
Force.”
“I like to travel,” the multi
lingual Sendral smiled. “An Air
Force career would probably make
it possible for me to see some

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan
iel Sendral, E-l Calle 4, Monte
bello Estates, Trujillo Alto, hopes
to fly fighters for the Air Force.
He believes he might eventually
make a military attache. Sendral
speaks French, Spanish and Eng
lish, with a smattering of Ger
man.
His mother was born in Berlin.
He is part French and part Hai
tian.
Emile was a French citizen un
til 1971. He received American
citizenship papers in Houston.
“It was necessary in order for
me to get an Air Force ROTC
scholarship and contract,” Sendral
explained.
He visited his sister, a junior
languages major at TCU, on the
Aggie Corps Trip to Fort Worth.
Another brother and sister are
at home.
Sendral gets there infrequent
ly. His last two summers were
spent at Eglin AFB summer
camp and working on a Gulf Oil
drilling rig off the Louisiana
coast.
Holidays are spent in Texas,
such as visiting in the home of
his roommate, Bobby Cantu, at
Helotes near San Antonio.
Emile has seen much of Texas
and some of the U. S. through his
student activities. He marched on
the Fish Drill Team, winner of
the fourth of five straight na
tional championships his fresh
man year. A Distinguished Mili
tary Student, he also is a member
of the American Institute of Aer
onautics and Astronautics, Town
Hall, Sigma Gamma Tau and
Wings and Sabers.
He earned Distinguished Stu
dent status enroute to a 3.0 over
all grade point ratio in TAMU’s
4.0 system.
Sendral’s flying reminds his
mother and grandmother of his
grandfather, whom they say he
resembles.
“He loved planes and dro,.
race cars, including a BMW Is
owned,” Sendral said. “He
grandmother were married in,,
airplane circling Berlin.”
Emile’s grandfather didn’t,,,
himself though. As a news corns
pondent, he accepted assignment,
as a gunner on a German boml*,
to get to the front. His plane
shot down over France.
A German soldier later $
word to the family that hisna
was seen on a grave marker.
