HOUSTON—Acting on a tip, state county and federal officials Monday arrested eight men and one woman and seized about one ton of marijuana which had been shipped by rail from Laredo, nar cotics officers said. They said the nine persons ar rested would be charged late Mon day with possession and sale of the drug. The marijuana was shipped in a truck-trailer mounted piggy back on a freight train flat car, the officers said. The marijuana was in 24 packages, each weigh ing about 100 pounds, authorities said. International DETROIT —The United Auto Workers and Chrysler Corp. reached tentative agreement on local-level contracts at two key plants where strikes had been threatened for Monday morning. About 9,000 UAW members work at the two Detroit-area plants. Strikes were threatened for Tuesday at three other Chry sler plants—one in Ohio and two in Michigan. Chrysler, the nation’s third largest auto maker, has faced almost daily strike dead lines in efforts to wrap up local agreements to supplement the na tional pact ratified by UAW members in the United States and Canada on September 23. WASHINGTON — The Justice Department said Monday top of ficials would testify under oath that the department had not con ducted a campaign to discredit Vice President Spiro T. Agnew by leaking information about the investigation of the vice president to newsmen. The department said it would not contest attempts by Agnew’s attorneys to subpoena department officials to give sworn depositions about Agnew’s allegations. The investigations have focus ed on Agnew’s term as Maryland governor. Hoffman, of Norfolk, Va., has been assigned to the case after all federal judges in Mary land declined to hear it on the basis of their political and per sonal friendship with Agnew. National LONDON—The new war in the Middle East could well determine whether oil is really an impor tant weapon in the Arab arsenal. Experts in London agree that if the weapon is used the result would likely be oil shortages in Western Europe, Japan and to some degree the United States. Higher fuel prices and perhaps rationing could result. It remains to be seen whether some Arab states may yet decide to cut back oil supplies in an at tempt to pressure the United States and others to drop sup port of Israel. There was much talk of such a cutback in Arab capitals even before the outbreak of hostilities. Agnew WASHINGTON — Legislation that would make it illegal to re cord a telephone conversation without telling the other party was introduced in the Senate by Sen. Birch Bayh, D-Ind. Such a law would prohibit the undisclosed recording of telephone (Continued from page 1) It’s like being a PR agent in La Grange. “I wish someone had taken me aside and talked about money,” Ashby said. “If money is impor tant to you, get out of journalism. In five or 10 years you could be come a shoe salesman in Amarillo and make a fortune, relatively speaking.” The post columnist also stressed “the life of a journalist is not exactly a straight life—it is not nine-to-five. You’ll be working some peculiar hours.” “Most people don't realize that if there’s a morning paper on Dec. 26, it mearfs someone had to work on Christmas day,” he said. He also told students of his 6 p. m. to 2:30 a. m. shift on the New York Times. Ashby warned students to seriously consider who they’re go ing to marry. “There is a high in stance of divorce among journal ists,” he said. “Journalists some how can’t fit right into normal family life.” “Somebody should have told me about booze,” Ashby explained. “It’s an occupational hazard. You’re always around liquor, and somebody’s always willing to buy you a drink.” The columnish seriously cau tioned students to know their ca pacity for liquor, and said some big name journalists have “wash ed themselves out of a job.” Ashby also warned student journalists to be aware of the power of the press. “You’re not just writing for yourself,” he ex plained. “You’re writing for a small sliver of the world. It (the press) is stronger than you— you’re a small cog is a big ma chine.” Ashby views journalists as “minUmissionaries.” He said “newspapers should try to right wrongs and tilt windmills. We should want to make things bet ter.” “Journalism is an awful lot of fun,” he said “You get to go places and do things, and live far beyond your means. You get paid to go and do things other people pay to do.” “Although journalism can be difficult, hectic and hazardous to your health — you rarely see old journalists — is is rewarding, and sometimes you really get the idea you’re doing something worth while, Ashby said. “I recommend it heartily: If I had it to do all over again, I’d do it exactly the same.” e ..ssjour-da Plumbing Service REPAIRS* SMALL CONTRACTS 713 823 7830 Guaranteed MtWr 24 hr. service • no extra tor after hrs. emergencies
