Walker, Roaches, Haddox in Top 10 !
The Texas Aggies ran through
a spirited session Wednesday
afternoon drilling against Clem-
son offensive and defensive for
mations. Coach Emory Bellard
cut 20 minutes off the practice
due to the heat.
Defensive end Blake Schwarz
will definitely miss Saturday’s
game at Clemson and offensive
guard Bud Trammell is doubtful.
Junior Paul Hulin will take
Schwarz’ place while freshman
Billy Lemons, who started against
Boston College, will be at guard
if Trammell is unable to play.
A&M continued to have players
among the nation’s leaders after
three games. Quarterback Mike
Jay is 20th in total offense with
an average of 171.3 yards per
game. Halfback Skip Walker is
tied for 10th in scoring with five
touchdowns. Split end Carl
Roaches is 8th in all-purpose
running with an average of 170
yards per game. Roaches also
ranks 4th in kickoff returns with
an average of 38.1 yards per re
turn. Kicker Randy Haddox is

USAC Twin 200’s have predicted
that the world’s closed course
speed record will be broken dur
ing qualifying trials for the 200
mile Indy car race to be held at
Texas World Speedway on Satur
day, October 6.
The present record of 212.766
m.p.h.—already held at Texas
World Speedway—was set by
Bobby Unser prior to the Texas
Twin 200 last April.
The speeds predicted for the
new record ranged from 213.3
predicted by Mario Andretti to
A. J. Foyt’s guess of 215 m.p.h.

average per game.
In Southwest Conference statis
tics, the Aggies rank no lower
than fourth in any of the six
categories. A&M is first in pass
ing offense, second in total of
fense, third in rushing offense
and fourth in total defense, rush
ing defense and passing defense.
Aggie players are among the
leaders in almost every category.
Pay is first in total offense and
fifth in passing. Walker is second
in tandem offense, tied for first
in scoring, Roaches is third and
Richard Osborne fifth in receiv
ing, Mark Stanley second in punt
ing, Roaches second in kickoff
returns, Pat Thomas first in
interceptions, and Alvin Bowers
fifth in rushing.

AUSTIN-—Texas Coach Darrell
Royal brought an eighth freshman
up to the varsity Wednesday—
fullback Pat Kennedy of San
Antonio Roosevelt.
Some 50,000 fans are expected
to see the Longhorns play Wake
Other drivers who made predic
tions included Johnny Rutherford
(214.5), Gordon Johncock (214.4),
Joe Leonard (214), Lee Kunzman
(214), Gary Bettenhausen (214),
and Wally Dallenbach, who
guessed 213.5 m.p.h.
The Championship half of the
Twin 200’s probably will remain
the fastest race in the sport’s
history for many years because
of the restrictions set for 1974 to
reduce the speeds.
Qualifying for the USAC sanc
tioned doubleheader is set for
Thursday, October 4 and Friday,
October 5 from 1 until 4:30 p.m.
The first of the 200 milers is
set to start at 1 p.m. on Saturday,
October 6.

TCU
FORT WORTH—Texas Chris
tian Coach Billy Tohill promoted
a pair of freshmen to the varsity
Tuesday to bolster the Horned
Frog secondary weakened by the
loss of safety Terry Drennan.
Roy Leach, an All-Stater from
Jacksboro, and George Washing
ton, a speedster from South Gar
land, are the rookies moving up.
Leach has been playing safety
and split end for the freshman
team while Washington has been
a defensive halfback.
Drennan is lost for the season
because of a broken ankle. Sopho
more Dennis McGehee of Pearsall
will replace him in the starting
lineup.
TCU opens its Southwest Con
ference season Saturday night in
Little Rock against Arkansas.
HOUSTON —Rice Coach A1
Conover, trying to boost his
sagging offense, announced Tues
day that freshman quarterback
Tommy Kramer would start next
week against Notre Dame.
The Owls are 1-2 following last
week’s 24-9 loss to Louisiana
State and they have an open date
this week to prepare for the
highly rated Irish.
Florida State Transfer Fred
Geisler has started the Owls’
three games this season, but in
consistent passing has hampered
Rice’s success.
“We live or die by the pass and
so far we’ve been dying,” Conover
said. “So we’re going to try a
different quarterback and see
what happens.”
