Coach Emory Bellard cut 20 minutes off the practice due to the heat. Defensive end Blake Schwarz will definitely miss Saturday’s game at Clemson and offensive guard Bud Trammell is doubtful. Junior Paul Hulin will take Schwarz’ place while freshman Billy Lemons, who started against Boston College, will be at guard if Trammell is unable to play. A&M continued to have players among the nation’s leaders after three games. Quarterback Mike Jay is 20th in total offense with an average of 171.3 yards per game. Halfback Skip Walker is tied for 10th in scoring with five touchdowns. Split end Carl Roaches is 8th in all-purpose running with an average of 170 yards per game. Roaches also ranks 4th in kickoff returns with an average of 38.1 yards per re turn. Kicker Randy Haddox is Eight drivers entered in the USAC Twin 200’s have predicted that the world’s closed course speed record will be broken dur ing qualifying trials for the 200 mile Indy car race to be held at Texas World Speedway on Satur day, October 6. The present record of 212.766 m.p.h.—already held at Texas World Speedway—was set by Bobby Unser prior to the Texas Twin 200 last April. Roy Leach, an All-Stater from Jacksboro, and George Washing ton, a speedster from South Gar land, are the rookies moving up. HOUSTON —Rice Coach A1 Conover, trying to boost his sagging offense, announced Tues day that freshman quarterback Tommy Kramer would start next week against Notre Dame. The Owls are 1-2 following last week’s 24-9 loss to Louisiana State and they have an open date this week to prepare for the highly rated Irish. Florida State Transfer Fred Geisler has started the Owls’ three games this season, but in consistent passing has hampered Rice’s success. “We live or die by the pass and so far we’ve been dying,” Conover said. “So we’re going to try a different quarterback and see what happens.” Intramural Results VOLLEYBALL Class B: LI spiked M-Band; SqlO spiked Ml; K1 spiked F2; E2 spiked Sql5; Class C: Hart spiked Puryear; Class X: Pea nut Gallery spiked ST AT; Chi Ep spiked Saints; Hart spiked For estry; Law spiked Urban Plan II; Walton spiked Envir.
