The strength of the Eagles will be its offensive unit, which has nine of the starting 11 and 16 of the top 22 returning from last year’s team. The top returnee is undoubtedly junior tailback Mike Esposito. Esposito set a school rushing record for sophomores last season with 930 yards on 182 carires for hefty 6.1 average. In addition, he totaled 165 yards on 16 pass receptions and two touchdowns and was kickoff re turn leader with 14 for 366 yards and a 26.1 average. (A former high school all-American, he has a 4.5 speed in the 40 yard dash and was the Eagles leading scorer last year with 54 points. Directing EC’s attack will be slenior quarterback Gary Mar- angi, who started for all of last year's 4-7 season. This year he has completed 10 of 18 passes for a 55.0 norm and ranks seventh on the Eagles’ all-time passing list. Backing him up are Mike Kruczek and Jerry Concannon. Concannon’s Brother Jack is the former BC great and presently plays for the Dallas Cowboys. In addition to Esposito, the Eagles are looking to fullback Keith Barnette and Frank Smith to hammer out yardage. Barnette was the leading rusher for the freshman team last year and Smith started for the varsity. Smith is presently averaging 6.3 a carry. The other halfback spot is clearly the property of senior Phil Bennett. Last year he was the number two ground gainer behind Esposito with 721 touchdowns. He had a 253 yard game against Temple last year which is the BC individual game rushing re cord. The receivers are sophomores Dave Zumbach at the split end 'KERS challenge of trying to shut down the highly touted Boston College running attack Satur day. Esposito to Lead Eagles A year ago, football buffs in the East got a big belly-laugh when lightly regarded Army up set A&M on the Aggies’ home turf. The 24-14 loss undoubtedly was A&M’s worst game of the 1972 season. This week, Eastern football comes to Kyle Field again but this time it isn’t a lightly re garded team. It is big, strong, THE CANTERBURY TALES with Rob Incjlis Presented by the Arts Committee. The star of the Boston College Eagles is a junior running back, Mike Esposito, who stands 6-1, weighs 190 and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. He has the strength to break tackles and al most unbelievable moves. Last year, as a sophomore, he ran wild, netting 930 yards on 182 runs for a 5.1-yard average. After two games this season, he has 231 yards on 31 carries for a 7.4 average and ranks 11th in the nation in rushing. Boston College fans call him the most explosive and exciting running back in B.C.’s 80 years of football. Last week the Aggies lost a five-point decision to LSU, 28- 23, in Baton Rouge while in near by New Orleans, Boston College was losing a five-point decision to Tulane, 21-16. Saturday night’s contest in Kyle Field will pit two talented teams on the comeback trail. Defense Readies for BC (Continued from page 5) Up front the Aggies will send Long and Paul Hulin at the ends with Warren Trahan and Ted Lamp at the tackles. Hulin and sophomore Blake Schwartz alter nate at that end spot. The A&M linebackers set to face the highly vaunted Boston College running game are Ed Simonini and Garth Ten Napel on the outside with Kenny Strat ton in the middle. Simonini is the team’s leading tackier with 33 followed by Stratton’s 27. Defensive coordinator Ben Hurt substitutes fairly liberally at the linebacker spots with John Paul McCrumbly and speedster Lester Hayes. The Aggies' defensive backfield has Thomas and James Daniels at cornerback with Larry Ellis and Tim Gray at safeties. Every member of the A&M starting defensive unit has either caused or recovered a fumble. Gray is the only starter to do both but Hayes has also achieved the feat in a substitute role. Mark Stanley is the confer ence’s leading punter with a 41.7 average and kicker Randy Had- dox is the SWC’s leading kick scorer with an 8.5 norm. Next week A&M travels to South Carolina to face Clemson while Boston College hosts Navy. position and Bob Rush at end.
