GENERAL (^§1 ELECTRIC THE BATTALION Friday, September 28, 1973 College Station, Texas Page 3 Impalas Leap over Ags In Rugby Battle, 16-10 By LYNN KENNEDY The Texas A&M Rugby Club can chalk one up to experience. The east African Kenya Im palas won a 16-10 victory over A&M. To quote the lyrics of a popular country and western tune “kicking and gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer,” would best describe the ruggers’ first defeat of the new season. The usual hard running and passing offense of the A&M white team was nullified by a muddy field and a tight Kenya defense. The Impalas effectively slowed the game to a pace that they could control. The experience of the Kenya squad paid off and the Aggies were unable to get their timing in ball control. The Africans punted the ball out-of- bounds and “knocked” (fumbled forward and kicked forward) in a style the first 15 was unaccus tomed to. Africa scored consistently in the first half and after an A&M “try” (td) was called back in the first few minutes of the second half the Aggies had to compro mise their game plan in an at tempt to catch the Impalas. The Aggies gave up three successful field goals (three points each) on penalties and were unable to stop two “trys” by the charging Kenya squad. John Gunn drew the only Aggie scores of the day with two free Agnew Seeks Halt To Jury Probe BALTIMORE (dp) — A special federal grand jury opened an un precedented investigation Thurs day, a political graft probe of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew. At the same time, Agnew’s law yers planned to go to court to stop the inquiry. One of the lawyers, Judah Best, said in Washington that a Jobs Provided our At Happy H Almost 1,100 student jobs were processed at the Remote Comput ing Center and the Teague Com puting Center during the first week of Happy Hour operations. The first day of Happy Hour, Sept. 17, 260 student jobs were processed. On the remaining days of the first week of opera tion the total student job count was 113, 209 and 235. The DPC has the capabilities of processing in excess of 750 student jobs during Happy Hour, and there fore encourages all students to take advantage of this service. Mappy Hour, established by the DPC in cooperation with the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, is a time dur ing which all student jobs are executed free of charge. Happy Hour is scheduled from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., every Sunday through Thursday, throughout the regular school year. All students are eligible to participate in Happy Hour. The DPC is providing this added service for students with the belief that it will continue to be a success, and that an in creased number of students will utilize Happy Hour. motion would be filed, possibly as early as the first of next week, seeking a temporary in junction to halt the grand jury proceedings. Such a move had been expected from the lawyers Thursday morning before the jury session started. “We are going to file,” Best said, adding he did not feel that Agnew’s argument against the grand jury probe would be hurt by filing for an injunction after the investigation was under way. Three witnesses appeared be fore the grand jury during the first hours of work, but only one of the witnesses could be identi fied. He was William J. Muth, * former vice president of the Balti more City Council, now the office manager of an engineering con sulting firm, Hurst-Rosche Engi neers, Inc. Muth has been an Agnew fund raiser. Agnew was notified last month by federal prosecutors that he was under investigation for pos sible criminal violation of tax, extortion, bribery and conspiracy laws. He has insisted he is inno cent of any wrongdoing. The allegations against him center on kickbacks from con tractors during the 1960s when Agnew was chief executive of Baltimore County and then gov ernor of Maryland. There also have been published reports which Agnew has denied that he received illegal cash after becom ing vice president in 1969. In a related development, three CBS television crewmen were de tained by federal marshals after they were found on the roof of an eight-story building next door to the federal court house where the grand jury was sitting. kicks and one “try.” The Thursday duel was only one of five stops in Texas for the Kenya Impalas, who are on a three week tour of stateside competition. The Kenya squad is made up of men whose hobby is rugby. Peter Evans, a school master on the Impala first 15 said he is spending his holiday on this American tour and he added that the majority of the club is made up of engineers, agrarians, and even a veterinarian. While the Impalas are staying in College Station they are housed with members of the A&M Club. The Aggies say that you play the game to win but after the game everyone gets to know each other at the traditional victory party which is always hosted by the home team. The evening party included ex changing of gifts between the club captains. The Aggies pre sented the Impalas with a pennant and a beer mug and the Kenya squad gave the White team a plaque and Impala ties. Kenya travels to Dallas this weekend for a game with the Dallas Rugby Club. United Fund Drive Begins A&M’s United Fund Drive be gins Monday in support of both the College Station United Chest and the Bryan United Fund. W. B. Lancaster, TAMU pay roll services manager, heads this year’s campus campaign. He noted that while both com munity drives have monetary goals — $112,791 for Bryan and $29,000 for College Station — no set amount is prescribed for the university. “We simply want to ensure that every member of the univer sity community is contacted and given the opportunity to contrib ute to these highly deserving en deavors,” Lancaster said. He emphasized that persons contributing through the univer sity campaign may designate their gifts for either the College Station or Bryan drives, or they may contribute to both. Persons desiring to contribute to both are requested to specify amounts which should be given to each drive. TAMU President Jack K. Wil liams has formally endorsed the campaign. “College Station’s United Chest and the United Fund of Bryan deserve our wholehearted sup port,” Dr. Williams said. “They directly benefit 15 organizations which serve people of all ages and background in our communi ties.” DISPLAY YOUR ° SPIRIT SIGNS Aua-t /&-&/€ act y/^ICA OFFICE Stvc.djZLni’ Progr0Ljm& OFJ/ce.
