United Auto Workers, Chrysler Settle Dispute United Auto Workers Tuesday began to sell 117,000 Chrysler production workers a new con tract with key fringe benefit im provements and a first step in the area of voluntary overtime. Local ratification votes are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Chrysler cannot re sume production until they are completed. Of the 69 Chrysler plants in volved in the strike, only 13 have settled contracts on local issues. Chrysler plants across the coun try and in Canada remained shut as UAW leaders met with com mitteemen, officers and shop stewards from all Chrysler locals to explain the new three-year con tract. Most of the shop stewards who attended Tuesday’s union meeting predicted ratification, although some said they were upset that UAW President Leonard E. Woodcock said individual locals could not strike over local issues without headquarters’ approval. Major provisions in the con tract provide for full retirement after 30 years’ service and a limitation on management’s right to assign overtime. Under it, a workers cannot be told to work more than nine hours a day, six days a week. In addition each worker cannot be told to woi’k Saturday off if he asks for it. Other provisions of the pack age include a three per cent wage increase in each of the three years, with an additional 12 cents per hour in the first year; a re vised cost of living formula that will boost the payment 17 per cent; a company-paid dental plan beginning in the second year, and a longer uninterrupted holiday during the Christmas-New Year season. UAW officials called the pack age a major American labor breakthrough and said they will not ask for any better package from Ford or General Motors. Traditionally, the union has tried to win a slightly better agreement from the remaining two members of the Big Three U.S. auto makers after winning its pattern agreement. Sources said Ford is next on the union’s list. The union struck Chrysler at midnight Friday to back up its contract demands.
