Charlton Heston In "OMEGA MAN” (PG) Demos Hold Telethon For Campaign Funds NEW YORK (A*) _ The man who convinced America to eat its chicken dinner out of a bucket now is trying to merchandise the idea that consumers should pay for political campaigns out of their pocket. “I think the American people would like to feel they own their government,” says John Y. Brown Jr. Armed with that belief and the selling techniques that turn ed Kentucky Fried Chicken from a local restaurant into the world’s second largest food operation, Brown is involved in his second political telethon in as many years. Brown, 39, whose interests now include a professional basketball team his wife operates and a chain of $1 hamburger outlets run from trolley cars, is the driv ing force behind the Democratic party’s telethon, scheduled for Ex-SDS Leader Appears Here bVz hours of prime time Satur day night on the NBC television network. Brown borrowed money to buy the fried chicken business in 1964 and sold it two years ago at a $35-million profit. He convincec his party to have last year’s pre convention telethon and a net work to televise it, then put up $1.5 million to back it. It is Brown’s hope that Satur day night’s extravaganza will net more than last year’s $2 mil lion and in the process serve as a basis for reform of the method in which political campaigns are financed. Brown believes political cam paigns must be financed by the public if they are to be honest. “In watching the process work, you just have to conclude that if you’re going to win in politics, you have got to be a deal maker,” Brown said in an interview. “The No. 1 one problem in our govern ment is unquestionably the way we finance political campaigns.
