The student conference, second of its type, is sponsored by TAMU’s Center for Marine Re sources and Sea Grant Col lege Program and by the Link Foundation with support from TAMU’s Galveston-based Moody College of Marine Sciences and Maritime Resources. The program is designed to Accusations Made by TIA Head HOUSTON WP) — Francisco A. Lorenzo, president of Texas In ternational Airlines accused Southwest Airlines Wednesday of trying to move into TPs prof itable routes without supply serv ices to unprofitable points. In a speech before the Houston Chamber of Commerce, Lorenzo said that Southwest’s request to the Texas Aeronautics Commis sion for an extension of routes to the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas would “destroy the deli cate balance underlying the state’s transportation system.” He said that if Southwest is granted the added routes, “serv ice elipiinations and curtailments at many points would be necessa ry.” Texas International now serves several cities in the Rio Grande Valley. Southwest has asked for routes to the Valley from Dallas through Houston and Harlingen. The president of Southwest Airlines, Lamar Muse, declined to answer charges made by Lo renzo. “I will answer Mr. Lorenzo ful ly and explicitly at the (TAG) hearing,” he said. “We are not going to argue the case in the newspapers. Lorenzo charged that South west “plans nothing but cherry- picking in the orchards of this state’s transportation system. Southwest has no interest in, nor public service obligation to pro vide service at the unprofitable smaller cities, and wants only to carve out a profitable intra-state route system from already-devel oped markets large enough to sus tain their jet aircraft and high operating costs.” Lorenzo rejected suggestions that TAG allow Southwest to serve the larger, profitable points in the state leaving TI with serv ice only to points now eligible for federal subsidy payments. provide an exchange of ideas be tween 75 specially selected stu dents and the professionals in vited to serve as panelists. In addition to panel discus sions, the students will partici pate in an environmental simula tion game called WALRUS (Wa ter and Land Resources Utiliza tion Simulation). The game il lustrates the various problems and conflicting interests involved in the management of coastal re sources. The conference will be held at the Galvez Hotel. Schwartz; Clarence Cottam, di rector, Welder Wildlife Refuge; Charles Devoy, general manager, Port of Galveston; John Mehos, vice president, Liberty Corpora tion, Galveston; George Mitchell, president, Mitchell Energy & Development Corporation, Hous ton; Jack Modesett, President, Terremar Corporation, Corpus Christi.
