Opens—Women’s Opens, that is. I Brenda Goldsmith, an 18-year- old golfer from San Antonio, will enter A&M as a freshman this fall, but she will not represent A&M in Southwest Conference competition. SWC rules prohibit competition by women. However, she will represent A&M in various women’s tournaments throughout the state and nation. Though starting golf just five years ago, Ms. Goldsmith has al ready logged many competitive rounds and won numerous honors. She finished 25th in the recent U. S. Women’s Open at Roches ter (N.Y.) Country Club with rounds of 76-76-77-78 on a Par 2 course. She also played in the 972 Open at Wingfoot, but Bnissed the cut. 1 Brenda will compete in her Khird U. S. Women’s Amateur ; Championship which begins Aug. 4 13 in Montclair, N. J. She has played in two profes sional events, finishing as the low amateur in the Alamo Open in San Antonio last year. Last year she played in the Quality Checkd Classic in Waco. Brenda has a handicap of one from the men’s tees at Pecan Valley Country Club, site of the Texas Open. Her instructor is Harold Blalock, pro at Pecan Val ley and a close friend of A&M coach Ransom. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A1 Goldsmith of San Antonio, Brenda comes from a golfing family. Brother Greg, 19, is at tending the University of New Mexico on a golf scholarship, and younger brothers Eric, 14, and Stephen, 13, are competing in junior tournaments this summer. Despite her obvious ability, Brenda has no plans for the pro tour. “I’m just not interested in being a pro,” she said. “Right now I want to go to school.” She turned down scholarship offers from New Mexico, Florida and Arizona to attend A&M on an academic scholarship provided by a former student. “I wanted to stay in Texas,” she explained. The 1-3, 240-pounder from Bay City s the team’s best blocking line- iman. Simonini, the fiery Italian from Las Vegas, Nev., broke into the starting lineup last year as a freshman and was named the SWC’s top freshman on defense. Even though just a sophomore, he is due to be the club’s defen sive leader this fall. Aggie Coach Emory Bellard will speak at the SWC Rally which will be part of a whirl wind speaking tour for him. He’s due to speak to the San Antonio A&M Club on Wednes day, Aug. 8; then in Fort Worth on Thursday, then to Dallas on Friday to address the Dallas A&M Club; then to Houston on Monday, Aug. 13 to speak to the SW Houston A&M Club. He winds it up with a date with the Capitol City A&M Club in Aus tin on Thursday, Aug. 16. Dog House Insurance?! Medals poured in Wednesday for the College Station Swim Club at an intermediate level meet at Meyerland Country Club in Houston. CSSC swimmers won four events, had 10 second-place fin ishes and came in third in seven events in the “B” and “C” divi sion competition. First-place medals in “B” com petition at Meyerland went to Kerry Kuttler in the senior boys 100-meter freestyle; Bill Harper, senior boys, 100 breast; Dwight Smith, 9-10 boys, 50 breast, and Debra Dowell, 11-12 girls, 50 free. Kuttler also placed second in his division in the 100 breast. Other CSSC swimmers placing second, all in “C” competition, were Danny Dowell, senior boys, 50 fly; Sam El-Sayed, 9-10 boys, 25 fly; Dwight Smith, 9-10 boys; 25 free; Robert Hurley, eight and under boys, 25 free, and Karyn Conway, eight and under girls. Third place medals went to Scott Lambert, 9-10 boys, 50 fly, “B” division, and in “C” compe tition, Holli Harper, senior girls, 50 breast; John Smith, 11-12 boys, 50 fly; Dan Rowe, 9-10 boys, 25 free; Sam El-Sayed, 9- 10 boys, 25 back, and a tie be tween Bonnie Bryant and Karyn Conway, eight and under girls, 25 free. Four CSSC freestyle relay teams placed second.
