Page 8 College Station, Texas Wednesday, May 2, 1973 THE BATTAUOl Improving Track Team In Austin Thursday NightL A&M’s rapidly improving track squad travels to Austin Thursday to compete in a triangular meet against defending conference champion Texas and SWC runner- up Rice. The field events start at 6 p.m. with the running events beginning at 7 p.m. in Texas Me morial Stadium. A&M will leave stellar perform er Scottie Jones behind to nurse a sore leg. The 100-yard dash is a toss-up with the Longhorns John Lee and A&M’s Billy Porter both with 9.5s to their credit. A&M’s Gerald D’Ambrosio has run a 9.6. Also competing in the 100 will be Aggie freshman Sammy Dierschke who will run this dis tance for the first time this year. In the 880, Texas has five of the six best times in the SWC. The second best time is held by Rice’s John Powell who has been injured for over a month. A&M, however, has three 880 men who are just rounding into form and are definitely in the same class with Texas. Running for A&M will be Harold Davis, Willie Blackmon and Horace Grant. “We’re going to see all the top SWC runners of this event in the meet Thursday,” said coach Charlie Thomas. “It’ll be wide open. Anybody could win it.” A&M’s mile relay team finished second to Texas in the Drake Re lays Saturday. Although Texas presently has the best time in the nation in this event, the Aggies are improving with every meet and could surprise the ’Horns.
