THE BATTALION Wednesday, May 2, 1973 College Station, Texas Page 3 End Of The Semester Moving Can Be Made Easy By JAN LANDERS Women’s Editor Most students find change a stimulus, but often leaving fa miliar surroundings bring mixed emotions for the college student. There is the challenge of change, the fun of making new friends and excitement of a new home or apartment. For graduating seniors moving may mean a new job in a different city. With the challenge and excite ment of change there is nothing like the task of moving, and the problem of logistics to bring one back to earth. There are basics that apply to moving regardless of the distance or quantity. There are a few items that make moving easier and less con fusing upon arrival in the new nest. These are heavy masking tape, felt tip pen or magic mark er, cardboard boxes, baggies, rope, heavy-duty garbage bags and newspaper. Cardboard boxes are the stan dard moving aid. These can be gathered from the corner grocery, supermarket or store. But remem ber especially in a college town, boxes may become scarce. Local liquor stores are a treas ure chest for boxes, labeled for the flavor of your choice, that are designed to carry large quan tities safely. But a word of warn ing, when unloading one might be met with a few raised eye brows, or if you fancy yourself to be a swinger, it might be an easy to read signal. Check the sides and bottom of the boxes to see how sturdy they are. This is where the masking tape comes in handy. Tape along the center fold of the bottom and for extra strength run the tape down one side across the bottom and up the other side. This may seem like extra work, but there is nothing like the nauseating feeling of the bottom of a box Two Coeds Named To All Southwest Rifle Team Cates Typewriters Co. Max Schill, coach of the women’s rifle team, said that the selection was based on the girls’ performance during the past year. “We are very proud of these two girls. There are about 20 colleges and universities in Texas and Louisiana that comprise the Association and only six girls were chosen for the team,” Schill said. Jordan is a senior accounting major from Katy. Her husband Wayne, who she met through the rifle team, was chosen for the second team last year. Wickham is a sophomore from Amarillo. Both girls participated in all the matches that the wom en’s rifle team competed in this year. The coeds will receive an award from the Southwest Rifle Asso ciation. Schill also mentioned that Jim my Lowe, of the men’s rifle team, received honorable mention on the All Southwest Rifle Association Men’s Team. This is the first year an A&M coed has been on the women’s team. All college students have moun tains of books, but many times the spines are broken due to im proper packing. They should be packed flat on their side, with wadded newspaper to fill in the spaces. Books can easily break fragile items packed with them. Books are very heavy in quantity, so use cartons that aren’t too large. Remember you will have to carry them when loading and un loading and you don’t want to spend the first night in your new surroundings with an aching back. Wrap all breakable items sep arately. Pack in heavy cardboard boxes. Nest cups and bowls, stand dishes, plates, saucers and plat ters on edge. Instead of using newspaper to fill in the “air pock ets” use dish towels or wash cloths or handtowels. This keeps breakables from chipping and eliminates the need for a separate box for linens. Tightly packed boxes stack much easier than do loosely pack ed boxes. Avoid over packing or under packing. Try to stay under 50 pounds per carton. Label all boxes with a general description of the contents and what room of the house it belongs. It is less time consuming to move one room at a time. If you start in the kitchen here are a few tips for conserving energy and making the most of all space. "'When packing flatwear and utensils, if you have the small boxes such as pencil boxes put them into the boxes then stack them into pots or pans. Measuring cups and spoons receive the same treatment. Stew pots or large roasters can hold an entire place setting of flatwear and can be stacked into large cardboard boxes. *Canister sets can present problems if the lids are not se cure. Empty sugar and flour into plastic baggies and seal with ties. Then put back into canisters. In the living room there will be many small nick-nacks, pictures and wall hangings, and possibly mirrors that need special treat ment. *For pictures and mirrors cut cardboard slabs to fit the surface front and back. Bind with tape and tie together. Small pictures can be wrapped and packed in cartons with bedding and clothing, if they are heavily padded, top and bottom. Remember that brok en glass can damage pictures, so be especially careful of any thing you value highly. Mark all mirrors, glass and tabletops with the magic marker, “glass” so you won’t put them under heavy items. *For table and chairs, remove legs if possible. If not, load tables SOSOLIKS TV & RADIO SERVICE Zenith - Color & B&W - TV All Makes B&W TV Repairs 713 S. MAIN 822-2133 on their top surface, legs up, tak ing care to protect their finish with blankets or padding. *For nick-nacks, small bottles, ash trays and figurines wrap in towels or pillow cases and pack in smaller boxes. The fewer in a box or carton the better and be sure to pack them tightly to avoid possible chipping. *Area rugs and pillows can be useful in packing. Pillows are used for padding between large items. Area rugs can be used as pads for table tops or chairs. In the bedroom, clothes are the major moving items. Wardrobe boxes can be purchased at U-Haul Trailer stations. These are usual ly low cost and are reusable. You may prefer to use a hanging rack in the back seat of the car, but remember to leave an opening so you can see rear or passing traf fic. *When packing clothes be aware of the space available to you, such as putting undershirts and socks in the shoes. Coat pock ets are excellent places for items such as rollers. Also larger rollers can be put into the bottom of garment bags. *A11 beauty aids, medicine and bathroom supplies can be carried in an overnight case. All medicine should be placed in a separate box clearly marked for safety sake. For the bathroom, by using towels and sheets for padding there shouldn’t be too many linens to pack. By this time you should be almost out of boxes, so plastic garbage bags can be used. Place sheets, towels in the bags and tie the end. If you are moving across the state or across the country and will need a moving van or trailer contact the U-Haul trailers as this is one of the most economical means of travel. You are assured of your goods arriving when you do. Most have one-way plans where you have no worry about returning it to the place of busi ness you obtained it. Most local moving companies have booklets that help you figure what size trailer, truck or van you need. This is done by a table that approximates the amount of space needed for each item. You can also rent or buy tape, rope, cartons, padding, trailer hitches and other items. Packing may not be the excit ing aspect of moving, but some planning and common sense can make it more efficient and less time and energy consuming.
