MSC BROWSING LIBRARY 2nd Floor New MSC Scottie Jones tied a new meet record in last weekend’s Kansas Relays in the 120-yard high hur dles to lead all A&M performers at the prestigious event. Jones, a former schoolboy All- America from Houston Elmore, was clocked in 13.5 seconds in the event won by Kansas star Ken Vandaveer also at 13.5 for the record. The old record of 13.6 has been intact since 1958 when Olympian Dillard Harrison ran. “Scottie ran a great race,” coach. Charlie Thomas said. “In fact, he ran three great races if you count the two it took to qualify for the finals. “There was a discrepancy in giving the Kansas boy first place as there wasn’t a hair between them at the finish. It took the officials a long time before an nouncing the final results.” Billy Porter was also impres sive for the Aggies at the meet, running a 9.5 in the 100-yard dash but failed to reach the finals. All eight qualifiers ran a 9.4 or better. Donny Rogers was the only other Aggie to score points by finishing fifth in the long jump with a leap of 20-10%. Danny Brabham of Baylor won the event. The remaining A&M track team participated in a pick-up meet in Austin with other confer ence schools, Abilene Christian and North Texas State with indi viduals who did not qualify to enter the Kansas meet. Aggie pole vaulters David Peterek and Harold McMahan took second and third, both with leaps of 15-0, while Craig Carter took second in the shot put with a heave of 51-6. Coach Ted Nelson, who accom panied the team to Austin, was particularly pleased with the per formance of Phil McGuire who took second in the high jump at 6-6. “He’s really beginning to come around for us,” Nelson said. “He had to compete against some good jumpers, not against a bunch of mullets.” Richard McGillivary, freshman from San Antonio, finished sec ond in the 440-yard intermediate hurdles with a 55.1. Permian Head Coach Added To Aggie Football Staff Athletic Director and head foot ball coach Emory Bellard an nounced Monday that Gil Bar tosh, who guided Odessa Permian to the Class 4A state title last fall, has been hired as receivers coach on the Texas A&M football staff. “Gil Bartosh is an outstanding coach with an excellent football mind,” Bellard said. “We are ex tremely pleased to have him join our staff at Texas A&M.” Bartosh has an outstanding coaching record in Texas high schools. His overall record is 81 wins, 16 losses and 2 ties and his teams won or shared district titles in nine of 11 seasons as a head coach. He was 46-6-2 at Houston Mil- by, 12-9 at Houston Lee and 23-1 at Odessa Permian. Between jobs at Lee and Permian, he served as an assistant coach at Rice, working as offensive coordinator and also as defensive secondary coach. Bartosh is native of Granger, Tex., where he was an outstand ing back. His running tactics there earned him the nickname of “The Granger Ghost.” He was a highly sought after schoolboy star who went to TCU where he was a great tailback on Coach Dutch Meyer’s spread- formation teams. The Frogs won the SWC title in his junior season of 1951. He and his wife, Bettye, have five daughters and one son, rang ing in ages of 19 to 4. Bartosh will report to work at Texas A&M as soon as he com pletes his personal business in Odessa. The sprint medley relay team of Robert Brew, Gary Ordat, Tom Owen and Alan Swagerty could have won the event but had a bad final hand-off to finish third. “I was real pleased with the way we competed in Austin. Some of our kids have really been put ting out the effort to compete and I hope it spurs on the more talented ones.” Judo Class Set Tonight At Gym Following the eight-week self- defense class that has just con cluded, a continuing class in judo is being offered for interested women beginning tonight at 7:15. The instructor, third degree black belt Gibbs Dibrell, explain ed that the class will be exclusive ly for women and will emphasize the softer elements of sport judo including women’s karate forms. Applications for self-defense will continue to be taught and the women will engage in light contests during each session. A trip is planned to Houston May 12 to meet with several women black belts and to learn one of the judo forms. Women interested should meet Wednesday evening in Room 253 of G. Rollie White Coliseum. There is no charge for instruc tion but $14 is required for the uniform and a $5 fee is charged for rank registration. The classes will meet weekly. PAWN LOANS Money Loaned On Anything Of Value.
