Baylor Sweep Knocks Aggies
From Conference Title Race
The Texas Aggies just about
handed the Texas Longhorns
their ninth straight Southwest
Conference diamond champion
ship on a silver platter as they
fell to the Baylor Bears twice in
rain abbreviated baseball
series.
The Bears took advantage of
A&M errors and wild pitching to
win 6-5 and 4-3 and give Texas
a three game lead with three to
play.
Ruggers Win
At Galveston
The TAMU White Rugby team
whitewashed five teams on way
to the second annual Galveston
Rugby Tournament champion
ship.
Twenty-nine teams entered the
three-day tournament sponsored
by the Galveston shrimp festival.
The Aggies breezed through
the tournament compiling 153
points while failing to yield a
goal.
On way to the finals the Ag
gies felled Hammond, La. 45-0,
Pensacola, Fla., 13-0; Illinois
State 30-0 and Houston 32-0.
Longhorns Nip
Aggie Netters
A&M’s tennis team fell to the
University of Texas 4-3 in South
west Conference action Saturday.
The narrow loss brings the
Aggies record to 26-16 in SWC
play while Texas ran its record
to 25-3.
In the top singles match of the
day Dan Nelson of Texas defeat
ed Bill Wright 7-5, 6-3.
In the No. 1 doubles match
A&M’s Dan Courson and Carter
Lomax defeated Graham Whal
ing and Nelson 6-3, 6-4.
The Aggies next stop is a
make-up match with SMU here
today at 1:30 p.m. before the
conference meet April 26, 27 and
28 in Austin.
Any combination of one Texas
win, one TCU loss ok a rainout
for either team and Texas is
kingpin again.
In Friday’s first game, a ninth
inning homer by Bob Redding
gave the Bears the victory.
The Aggies scored all their
runs in the opener via the home-
run ball. Sandy Bate blasted a
three-run shot in the third, Mike
Schraeder and Jim Bratsen added
solo shots to cap the Aggie scor
ing.
A&M out hit the Bears 12 to
seven but the win just wasn’t in
the cards.
Steve Janda, the fourth A&M
pitcher, was the loser with Bay
lor’s Rick Fox getting the win.
Bobby Wittkamp started for
the Aggies and was replaced by
Jimmy Juhl in the fifth. Charlie
Jenkins then hurled two innings
before Janda finished the game.
Schroeder was the leading Ag
gie hitter in the first game with
a 3 for 4 performance with Bate
2 of 4 with three RBI’s.
Aggie pitchers walked seven
and struck out six in the opener.
A&M jumped to a early lead
in the nightcap.
A run on an error and Brat-
sen’s second homer gave the Ags
a 2-0 lead in the third. Baylor
tied the contest in the fourth as
Kent Wilson doubled in two Bay
lor runs.
The Aggies forged ahead again
in the top of the fifth as Hacker
singled and later scored on a
fielders choice. Baylor bounced
right back in their half of the
inning scoring on an A&M error
and fielders choice.
Baylor sealed the sweep in the
sixth as Denny Copland doubled
and later scored on Tommy Oli-
phant’s single.
Bobby Falcon went the full six
innings for the Aggies and suf
fered the loss in the second game.
A&M staff strikeout leader
whiffed six and gave up five
bases on balls.
“We just couldn’t get the last
three out,” said a dejected Aggie
coach Tom Chandler. “We didn’t
get help from the bullpen whep
we needed it.”
‘Falcon had good stuff but
miscues hurt us in the second
game,” Chandler said.
The Aggies now stand 8-6 in
loop play with a 18-7 season’s
record. Baylor is 8-7 in confer
ence and 19-14 overall.
A&M closes out season’s play
this Friday and Saturday as
Texas visits Kyle Field.
