Page 4 College Station, Texas Wednesday, April 18, 1973 THE BATTALION “Bite Down Hard” is the new Jo Jo Gunne album and except for an occasional moog synthe sizer bit, it could have been done the same day as the group’s debut record, “Jo Jo Gunne.” Only, even though this new one sounds the same, “Bite Down Hard” doesn’t nearly have the material Gunne had to work with the first time around. The single you’ve probably heard on the radio is “Ready Freddie,” a really enthusiastic number, perfect for Jo Jo Gunne. Jay Ferguson sings this type song well, unfortunately though, it’s one of only two on the whole record that has Gunne’s energy in it. “Roll Over Me” is the other one. It is a good rocker that is bound to get a ride on the radio charts when “Freddie” fades. “60 Minutes to Go” is pitiful. It sounds like the record company pulled a “Stephen Foster” on Ferguson. You remember the story about some mean guy throwing Foster into a room and not letting him out until Foster came up with a new tune. That’s what “60 Minutes to Go” makes me think happened, only Fergu son must have sneaked out the window or something. If you’re really wanting a new Jo Jo Gunne album, “Bite Down Hard” isn't all that bad. But otherwise, pick up Gunne’s single and wait until next time. Judee Sill looks like a cross between Miss Jane Hathaway and John Lennon. And even though it is the same picture I saw before I listened to her new album, she looks all different now. The name of the record is “Heart Food” and it’s her second. “Heart Food” is the most satis fying thing I’ve listened to since “Holland” by Millie Foye, uh, I mean by the Beach Boys. Miss Sill wrote all but one of the songs. They’re mostly about the events surrounding one who looks for love, all of them could definitely be classified as heart food anyway. Obviously, this girl has got quite a bit of love in her. In “The Kiss,” she sings, “Hear the sad nova’s dying cry. 1 Can you imagine that, feeling sorry for a nova? The whole record is beautifully done. Banjo, harmonica, steel guitar and especially the back ground strings are all used per fectly. Miss Sill’s voice is easy to listen to. Her songs help, of course, but she has that quality NOW SHOWING 5:30 - 7:30 - 9:30 Twilight Hour — 5-6:30 p. m. I won’t talk anymore of what she sings about, it’s all unnecessary once she’s in your ear. Speaking of ears, one of the greatest anato mists of all time was Leonardo da Vinci. And speaking of da Vinci, one of his greatest efforts was his painting “The Last Sup per.” Speaking of that last supper, what is Texas A&M Uni versity doing having school on Good Friday? By BURT OWENS College Station is a surpris ingly good location for a motel. Faye McDonald, front office manager at the Ramada Inn in College Station, recognizes a con dition that until recently seems to have been a well kept secret. But it is no secret to anyone who has looked for a week-end residence that Bryan-College Sta tion has a shortage of motel rooms. The College Station Ramada Inn has 155 rooms. According to McDonald, a room for an A&M football weekend must be re served at least six months in ad vance. The Inn is always filled on weekends when there are major universtiy functions. She said there are enough confer ences, symposiums and reunions to keep them busy. She estimated they maintain 50 per cent occu pancy throughout the year. They require a deposit with reserva tion of a room for special week ends such as football games, graduation, etc. Francis Frey, desk manager at the Ponderosa Motor Inn, recom mends making room reservations for these special weekends a year in advance. She says the motel’s 93 rooms are also always packed on weekends of races at Texas World Speedway. She said, “We could have booked 75 more rooms for the last race.” Reservations for race weekends usually have to be made six months in advance. Frey said that the bulk of their business is also from conferences at the university. People coming here on week ends unaware of the motel room shortage find themselves travel ing to nearby towns looking for accommodations. But sometimes the towns are not so nearby. Sophomore John Williams said the nearest room he could fid for Parents’ Day weekend tH year was in Waco. It is not usual for visitors to end up staj. | ing in Navasota or Caldwell, In response to this demand 1# I rooms, a new Holiday Inn ad I Aggieland Inn are being builtii| College Station, each with almn 200 rooms.
