Texas Wednesday, April 11, 1973 THE BATTALION Larry Galvin Represents Aggies In Bowling Finals By BURT OWENS Sophomore Larry Galvin will represent A&M at the Association of College Unions-International’s national bowling finals this spring. The finals will be April 14-16 at Syracuse, New York. This is the second year in a row that A&M has been repre sented at this national tourna ment. Galvin won his finalist spot by capturing first overall in men’s bowling at the ACUI Region XII Tournament held Feb. 9th and 10th at Canyon, Texas. In the process of taking first overall, he won first in men’s singles, he and his partner, Doug Ocker, won first in doubles and he was a member of the Aggie group that got sev enth place in team competition. Galvin said, “After the first three- game set in the team events, I was behind by 96 pins, but in the second set I was able to find the right lane and moved to within six pins of the two leaders. After the third and final set, I was ahead by 110 pins.” ACUI Region XII consists of colleges in Texas, Louisiana, Ar kansas and New Mexico. There were 50 bowlers competing at the Canyon tournament this year. There will be about 30 people in the national finals. A&M was represented at the national finals last year by Bill Kettler, sophomore accounting major who is also a member of this year’s team. The A&M bowling team is not a part of the University Athletic Dept. It is a by-product of the Aggie All-Star bowling league at the Triangle Bowl lanes in Bryan. The league is exclusively for stu dents taking twelve or more hours at the university. The league pres ident picks five people that have the highest averages and they constitute the team that repre sents Texas A&M. They pay their own way to most tournaments, except for a small sum given them by the University Recreation Dept. However, they were provid ed transportation to the Canyon tournament by the university. Galvin said he first bowled when he was eight years old. “One of my friends asked me to be on his team.” He bowled at state tournaments when he m at Stephen F. Austin High Soli}; in Bryan. He said he would | to practice 30 or 35 games week, “but I only get to pk about ten because being in Aggie Band takes most of time.” Vol. He has bowled two 300, or p feet, games, but averages 196,|j said, “I attribute my succesij Canyon to being left-handed."
