A sweep of the three-game series is essential if the Aggies are to keep in the Southwest Con ference race. The same is true for TCU. A&M stands with a 4-2 loop record while the Frogs are 4-4. Texas is leading the race at 7-2 which includes a three-game sweep over TCU in the season’s opener. TCU was firmly picked as the conference runner-up in pre-sea- son picks and the Aggies third. The past two years, TCU has had a field day with the Aggies win ning five of six encounters. The key to victory for the Ag gies will be the pitching corps which has been fantastic at times and horrid at others. A&M clear ly looks to have an edge in bat ting with a .295 team average while the Frogs are hitting at a .265 pace. Overall, A&M stands 14-3 while TCU has an 18-8 record. “TCU will be our toughest test to date,” coach Tom Chandler said. “If we sweep the series, I think we’ll be in the thick of title contention. If we get swept, we're in trouble. “We’ve become much more ag gressive with our bats and doing a better job defensively. We’ve got to keep getting the timely hits we’ve gotten in past games. We don’t have the type team to overpower anyone. We’ve just got to chip away and get runs. “TCU’s pitching staff is excel lent with three of its top four returning from last year. They’ve had a little trouble with the bat LOOK INTO THE REAL GREAT ISSUES & RHA ROD SERLING CREATOR OF TWILIGHT ZONE NIGHT GALLERY RESERVED SEATS: GENERAL ADMISSION: A&M STUDENT $.50 OTHERS $1.50 APRIL 10,8:15 A&M STUDENT $1. In the second game, it will be fireballer Bobby Falcon (3-0, 2-0) against Joe Means (5-2, 3-1). Saturday it will be freshman Clint Thomas (0-0) against Tom Ladusau (5-1, 0-1). Falcon has tossed 48 strikeouts in the 26 Va innings he’s pitched to lead the conference in that category. Wittkamp is second in that department with 19 strike outs in 24% innings. Thomas has had 13 in the 10% innings he’s pitched. Overall, A&M pitchers have struck out 135 opponents in the 132 innings pitched. Leading strikeout artist for TCU is Johnstone who has whiff ed 41 in 52 innings. Means has 33 in 42 innings and Ladusau has 32 in 41 innings. Overall, TCU pitch ers have struck out 135 batters in 183 innings. TCU will start three seniors, three juniors, a sophomore and a freshman. Catching will be Dana Carden (.255), Mike Luttrell (.181) will be at first, leading hitter Phil Turner (.406) will be at second, Tom Butler (.386) will be at shortstop and Don Bodenhamer (.205) will be at third. The outfield will consist of Jimmy Torres (.308), Gene Bur ton (.285) and Pat Carden (.236). Bodenhamer’s hitting has been a sore spot for coach Frank Win- degger.
