Announcement of their selec tion was made by the Board of Advisors to Outstanding College Athletes of America, an annual awards volume published to honor America’s finest athletes. Criteria for those selected in clude leadership, service, schol arship and outstanding athletic activities. Ponzio, a senior Health and Physical Education major, has been bowling since the 11th grade. Ponzio led the A&M Women’s Bowling Team through district and state tournaments while becoming state women’s champion. Alpha Lambda Will Have Spring Banquet Alpha Lambda will hold a for mal Spring Banquet April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ramada Inn. Speaker for the banquet will be Dr. Haskell Monroe. Dr. Mon roe is the Assistant Vice Presi dent for Student Affairs. The banquet will be held joint ly with Phi Eta Sigma, a national Freshmen’s Academic Honor Fra ternity. Alpha Lambda and Phi Eta Sigma work with Texas A&M Scholastic Services, which pro vides tutoring for students. Teaching is her main interest and she will be qualified to teach the 12 grades. She is president of the Women’s Sports Associa tion on campus. Collins holds three state swim ming records and represented A&M in the Association for In tercollegiate Athletics in the Women’s National Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Champion ship this year. Physical Education Majors and Women’s Sports Association are clubs she is active in. She is a member of the volleyball team and works out with the track team. Collins works with handicapped children and the Adapted Physi cal Education program on cam pus. She has a Red Cross In structors card and teaches swim ming during the summer. Both women are active not only in sports but in activities in the community and both have made the Dean’s List. This year, all participating athletes will be eligible for the Outstanding College Athletes of America Hall of Fame Awards Program. Those selected by the Board of Directors will be hon ored at an awards banquet. The ceremony will be attended by prominent sports figures across the nation. The Hall of Fame will be permanently estab lished in Los Angeles and will serve to honor each year’s win ning athletes. In congratulating the Out standing Athletes, sportswriter and commentator Howard Cosell said, “These athletes have creat ed within themselves those qual ities that enable them to make an important contribution to the playing field and to society in the full sweep of their respective lives.” Cap And Gown Announce Initiation And Banquet Plans Wrong (Continued from page 1) swing away. Cap and Gown will hold a Nominee’s Tea in the home of President Williams April 8 at 2:30 p.m. The purpose of the tea is to allow the members a chance to meet with prospective new mem bers and decide on who will be initiated. Following the tea, the mem bers will hold a business session and vote on the new membership for next year. To be eligible for membership into the honor society a coed must have a 3.0 grade point ratio each semester, be a second se mester junior and a full time student. April 15 at 7:30 p.m. an initi ation ceremony will be held in the Assembly Room of the Me morial Student Center. According to Debbie Fisher, a member of Cap and Gown, the Spring Banquet will be held April 11 at 7:30 p.m. The banquet will be hosted in the Bluebonnet Room of Wyatt’s Cafeteria. Cap and Gown is an honorary society which was formed this year to recognize women on the A&M campus who have a high standard of scholarship. It also promotes college loyalty, recog nizes and encourages leadership and helps to develop a finer type of college women. Library Gets $5,000 Gift A $5,000 gift has been made to acquire books for the Library in honor of Sterling C. Evans, announced Director of Libraries John B. Smith. The donor wished to remain anonymous. Smith said the gift will be used to acquire library materials to benefit all University Library users. Books purchased will be marked with a card recognizing Evans, a 1921 A&M graduate and past chairman of the TAMU Sys tem Board of Directors.
