Baltimore’s wheeler - dealer Colts—with the second choice— got quarterback Bert Jones of Louisiana State, but it was other wise a day for giant linemen from college football’s Class of ’72. The Philadelphia Eagles picked 250-pound offensive tackle Jerry Sisemore of Texas and the New England Patriots followed by locking up 263-pound Alabama guard John Hannah. “New look” Baltimore moved into the No. 2 drafting position via a trade with New Orleans, 2-11-1, and General Manager Joe Thomas created another mild stir by bagging the strong-armed Jones. Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers was the 25th pick of the first round, going to the Oakland Raiders. The 173-pound Nebraska sensation admitted being “dis appointed” that NFL teams wrote him off as being too small. Dave Butz, another 275-pound defensive tackle, had been fore cast by many experts to go No. 1, but he went fifth to the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-9-1. Butz was one of three Boiler makers picked in the first round. Record-smashing runner Otis Armstrong was chosen ninth by the Denver Broncos and wide re ceiver Darryl Stingley went to New England in a complicated 19th selection. The Chicago Bears started the confusion by swapping their 17th position in the first round to Detroit for the Lions’ 19th spot. Detroit, in the deal, gave Chicago tight end Craig Cotton. Detroit used the No. 17 slot to take defensive end Ernest Price of Texas A&I. Tight end Charlie Young of national champion Southern Cali fornia was the sixth man picked, going to Philadelphia. Buffalo picked seventh and nabbed 250-pound tackle Paul Seymour of Michigan, a man the Bills hope can open the holes for the great O. J. Simpson. Small college strongboy Wally Chambers of Eastern Kentucky, a 250-pound defensive end, went to Chicago on the Bears’ first of two picks in the opening round. Baltimore, with its own pick, drafted offensive tackle Joe Erh- mann of Syracuse, who bounced back from a serious knee injury in 1972. New England, thanks to the Garrett deal, wound up with three picks among the first 26. In addition to Hannah and Sting- WE GIVE w Pm \M W m\ WE GIVE ley, new Pats Coach Cliiitt banks plucked Rose B«; Sam “The Bam” Cunnir running back and blocker.
