To this date, the Board has not met. Quite incensed over the new law, Arizona United Farm Work ers, with assistance from Caesar Chavez, anounced a drive to re call “One-Eyed Jack.” 103,000 signatures were needed for a spe cial election; 150,000 have been secured so far and a thousand a day are still coming in. Who knows? This could get contagious —imagine a recall election of Ronald Reagon or Nelson Rocke feller. What if Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe got recalled, or Maryland’s Marvin Mandel? Per haps we are witnessing the start of a national pattern. But what are the chances? A recent and reliable poll showed over 80 per cent of the state’s voters would support Jack again. Even allowing for a 30 per cent margin of error it doesn’t look good. The Recall Committee plans to turn in its petitions soon, and they’re counting on something different fro mthe normal liberal coalition to carry them through. During a state-wide tour by Cha vez a few months back, United Farm Workers collected signa tures in every small town with a population over a thousand and the results were heartening in that local newspapers greeted Chavez with praise for his efforts. Although the result of the re call drive may not be the end of “One-Eyed Jack” nor the repeal of the vicious anti-union legisla tion (although parts of it may eventually be ruled unconstitu tional), a power base for city council and state representative seats may develop as a result of the campaign. Grad Employment Situation Better A&M students scheduled to graduate in May or this summer face a “much improved employ ment picture,” reports TAMU Placement Director Robert C. Reese. Recruiting for spring and sum mer graduates begins next Mon day, and Reese expects 180 to 185 employers will interview on cam pus during the next three months. The office already has 166 com panies scheduled. Reese said employment oppor tunities appear to be improved in most fields. There are good demands for graduates in ac counting and most engineering degrees, especially students studying industrial distribution in the Engineering Technology. Starting salaries are three to five per cent above the same time last year, Reese added. The College Placement Coun cil, national research arm for placement offices, reported ear lier this month a survey of 672 employers around the nation showed they plan to hire 16 per cent more college graduates in 1973 than last year. Improved national prospects ranged from a 27 per cent in crease for engineering majors to four per cent for students in lib eral arts. CPC pointed out the demand for master’s graduates will be up 22 per cent and they anticipate a 20 per cent increase in Ph.D. hir ings. Deficit Spending Upsets Committee WASHINGTON (A*)—The chair- he doesn’t know whether it would. man of the Senate Appropriations Committee said Thursday the government’s “heavy spending cannot long continue without cha otic consequences.” “If we continue expenditures greatly in excess of income, it will compel an increase in taxes,” Sen.. John L. , McClellan, D-Ark., told newsmen. He emphasized that he will strive to hold spending down so that a tax increase can be avoided. He said Congress could do it but Rites Held (Continued from page 1) of the 23rd Psalm and remember 'the truly great man he was.” Scriptures from the Old and New Testaments were read by Corps Chaplain Kerry Hulse, and Roger Monk, Civilian Student Council chaplain, led the congre gation in prayer. The Ross Volunteers presented a 21-gun salute to the memory of the former president, and bug lers from the Texas Aggie Band sounded the traditional Silver Taps to bring the service to a close. TAMU President Dr. Jack K. Williams presided over the service which was attended by more than 1,000 students, faculty, and citi zens of the Bryan-College Station area. McClellan, who took over as chairman of the Appropriations Committee in the final months of the last session of Congress, said the courts ultimately will have to resolve the dispute over whether the President can im pound funds voted by Congress. Some Democratic leaders have accused President Nixon of ex ceeding his authority and en croaching on the powers of Con gress by impounding or otherwise withholding appropriated funds. Around $12 billion is currently impounded, as Nixon has acted to hold spending in the current fiscal year to $250 billion in an effort to fight inflation and avoid an increase in taxes.
