It will be the third television appearance for Texas and the first for A&M in over two years. The last time Texas was on the tube was against the Razorbacks in a game billed as the SWC championship game. The circumstances surrounding this final clash of the 1971 season are very similar to that of last Thursday’s freshman contest be- BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES One day 5c per word »c per word each additional day Minimum charpre—75c Classified Display SI.00 per column inch each insertion DEADLINE 4 p.m. day before publication WORK WANTED Will do typing. A&M was given no chance to come close in that tilt either. The Texas freshmen were rid ing on the crest of a 19 game streak, while the Fish had lost 13 players to the varsity ranks. As most people know by now, the Fish defeated the Shorthorns here 10-8. A&M, it seems, does not have a snow ball’s chance of winning with its disappointing 3-7 season and 2-4 SWC marks against the ’Horns with an 8-1 overall and 6-0 loop mark. Yet stranger things have hap pened in SWC football this year, and mostly to the Aggies. Texas has won the title, win or lose Thursday. There is nothing left for them to do but get ready for Alabama and the Cotton Bowl. For the Aggies it could be a win that enables them to regroup for next year. A&M’s only chance for an up set win will be in stopping Texas’ sophomore fullback Roosevelt Leaks up the middle. Leaks top ped the 1,000 yard mark last weekend against TCU and has been the key to success for the ’Horns all year. Texas will be going at A&M’s strongest asset with middle line backer Grady Hoermann, and de fensive tackles Boice Best and Bill Wiebold. A&M’s defensive unit has been very effective against the run all year and leads the SWC in that department. Offensively, A&M must score 20 points to be in contention, and that’s where the conflict comes in. Texas has also had a super-tough defense, allowing only 18 points in the last three games. Texas has been vulnerable to the pass but has yielded very little on the ground. A&M has been able to rush the ball at times and has been able move the ball through the air at times. But these times have come few and far between. In conclusion, A&M must score and control the football to keep the game interesting. This will be the 79th meeting between the two with Texas hold ing a mammoth 55-18-5 lead. The ’Horns won the first game back in 1894, 38-0. A&M’s last victory was in 1967 with a 10-7 upset that enabled the Aggies to com pete in the 1968 Cotton Bowl. Texas has been there every year since. The longest A&M win streak is three games with two wins in 1909 and one in 1910. The largest A&M margin was a 28-0 win in 1925. The most A&M points was in the 1956 game with a 34-21 victory. Texas’ longest win streak is 10 SOSOLIKS TV & RADIO SERVICE Zenith - Color & B&W - TV All Makes B&W TV Repairs 713 S. Their largest margin was in the 1898 48-0 tilt. The most Texas points was in 1970 with a 52-14 win and those 66 points are the highest total scored by the two teams. Last year Texas broke the Ag gies’ four game win streak with a 34-14 win in College Station and knocked the Aggies out of a Liberty Bowl bid. It was Donnie Wigginton’s masterful perform ance, along with a Texas defense that swiped three Joe Mac King passes and scooped up two A&M fumbles. A&M’s two scores came back to back with King hitting Billy Joe Polasek on a 15-yard strike and a two-yard plunge by Mark Green. Wigginton is now a coach here at A&M while King has graduated and Green is out with a bad knee and will not see action. For coach Emory Bellard, it will be his first encounter against his former Austin boss. Bellard spent five years as backfield coach there where he designed the Wishbone attack used by both teams now. Darrell Royal is in his 16th season as head coach of the ’Horns, where he has compiled a 134-33-4 mark overall and an 86- 20-2 SWC mark. Last week he won his fifth straight loop crown making a total of nine since tak ing over. He has also taken the Longhorns to 12 bowl games in 15 years and will make it 13 in 16 this New Year’s Day. Top players for Texas are of fensive tackle Jerry Sisemore,, quarterback Alan Lowry, fullback Leaks, and linebackers Randy Braband and Glen Gaspard. Nineteen fi’eshmen are now on the A&M varsity, with six being added after last week’s season finale. Newcomers are halfback Bucky Sams, quarterback Dale Ammons, linebacker Garth Ten Napel, offensive tackles Bruce Welch and Wayne litis and mid die linebacker Carl Warnke.
